Europe, News 1 Comment on Zelenskyy says Ukraine plans to hold Global Peace Summit in autumn

Ukraine is planning to hold a Global Peace Summit in the autumn, the country’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during an emergency meeting with the heads of Ukraine’s diplomatic missions to foreign countries in Zakarpattia region on August 2, 2023.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba attended the meeting with several Ukrainian diplomats. During the meeting, Zelenskyy outlined five foreign policy priorities for the next political season and stated that the implementation of the Peace Formula is the main priority. He told officials that peace talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia would be a stepping stone toward that goal.

The Ukrainian president said, “We are working to make it [peace summit] happen this autumn. At a summit that needs – and may need – a global majority. Representatives of the North and South, East and West. Autumn is very soon, but there is still time to prepare for the summit and involve most of the world’s countries. It depends on your commitment.”

The Ukrainian president told diplomats that “the second main focus of Ukrainian diplomats’ work for the next six months is to provide weapons and equipment to our army and to strengthen sanctions policy against the Russian Federation.”

He emphasized that “The power of our warriors at the front is largely a consequence of the power of our agreements with our friends and partners. The more successful diplomacy is, all forms of diplomacy – official and unofficial, institutional and media, cultural diplomacy, and the power of ordinary human sincerity, that is, the better we are understood in the world – the more our warriors can ultimately do.”

Zelenskyy said that “the Ukrainian troops need effective air defense systems, long-range weapons, including ATACMS, equipment and scarce munitions, as well as F-16 aircraft.” He further added that “This month the training of our Ukrainian pilots will begin. Now we need to work one hundred percent with the countries that have these aircraft and will be able to transfer them to us after training. The delivery and combat use of F-16s by our pilots should take place as soon as possible.”

During the meeting, the Ukrainian president said that autumn should also be the time for a new package of EU sanctions against Russia. “We need to synchronize the speed of sanctions policy among our partners. Those who are lagging behind in sanctions should feel how important it is to be faster,” he added.

Zelenskyy told Ukrainian diplomats that they must also work to enhance interactions with the international community “for the sake of reconstruction and development” as well as enhance efforts to attract investment, new technologies, and increase economic activity in Ukraine.

“Every new investment in Ukraine now is one more step towards our victory… Every new technology that comes to Ukraine works to save the lives of Ukrainians,” Zelenskyy said while urging the diplomats to attract major companies in the countries where they work to invest in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy also pointed out that Ukraine’s integration with the European Union and NATO, security guarantees and neighborhood policy, as well as protecting Ukrainians, and ensuring the safe return of people home and preserving their ties with Ukraine, as other important tasks.
