Biden meets Ukrainian ministers for the first time since the Russian invasion

U.S. President Biden met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov on March 26 in Warsaw, Poland, as the Russian invasion into Ukraine entered the second month. They discussed the latest situation related to Ukraine’s military, diplomatic, and humanitarian situation.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and U.S. chargé d’affaires ad interim to Ukraine Kristina Kvien. also joined the meeting held at the Warsaw Marriott Hotel.

The White House statement said that Biden updated the Ukrainian ministers on U.S. efforts to rally the world in support of Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression, including Biden’s meetings this week in Belgium as well as the significant military and humanitarian assistance the United States is providing to Ukraine and help Ukraine defend its territory.

President Biden and Ukrainian officials also discussed the United States’ “ongoing actions to hold Russian President Putin accountable for Russia’s brutal aggression, in coordination with our allies and partners,” including through the new sanctions actions announced by the U.S. president in Brussels on March 24.

The meeting comes after President Joe Biden held meetings with leaders of NATO, the European Union and G7 to unite allies and partners on the coordinated future strategy against Russia.

Ukraine’s foreign minister tweeted his photo of meeting Blinken and Austin with other Ukrainian leaders. “This special 2+2 format allows us to seek practical decisions in both political and defense spheres in order to fortify Ukraine’s ability to fight back Russian aggression,” he said.

After meeting with top US officials in Warsaw, Kuleba said they believed officials in U.S. President Biden’s administration were “keen to move on with further sanctions.” Reznikov said in a statement that he and Kuleba will attend Biden’s speech later on Saturday in Warsaw.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Andrii Deshchytsia and the chief of staff of the Ukraine Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andrii Yanevskyi also attended the meeting on Saturday.
