U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held extensive high-level talks in Beijing on May 14, 2026, during Trump’s state visit to China, as both countries sought to stabilize relations while addressing major global and regional issues, including trade, Taiwan, Iran, and technology cooperation.
The visit, taking place from May 13 to May 15, marks the first trip by a sitting U.S. president to China in nearly a decade and comes at a time of continued competition and tension between the world’s two largest economies.
The meetings on May 14 included a formal welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People, bilateral talks between the two leaders and their senior delegations, discussions involving U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and a large state banquet hosted by Xi in the evening.
Both sides publicly emphasized cooperation and stability throughout the day, although major differences remained, especially over Taiwan.
Welcome Ceremony in Beijing
Trump arrived at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in the morning and was welcomed by Xi with a full state ceremony that included national anthems, a military honor guard, a 21-gun salute, and children waving Chinese and U.S. flags.
The U.S. delegation included Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Several major American business leaders also attended parts of the visit, including Elon Musk of Tesla, Tim Cook of Apple, and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. China’s delegation included Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Premier Li Qiang, Vice Premier He Lifeng, and senior Communist Party official Cai Qi.
The talks between Trump and Xi lasted around two hours, longer than originally planned, reflecting the broad agenda and importance of the discussions.
In his opening remarks, Xi said the meeting was taking place during a period of major global change and uncertainty. He stressed the need for China and the U.S. to avoid confrontation and build a more stable relationship.
Xi said China and the U.S. should “be partners not rivals” and called for a “constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability.” He also delivered a strong warning on Taiwan, describing it as the most important issue in bilateral relations.
“The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations,” Xi said. “If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts.”
He added that “Taiwan independence” and peace in the Taiwan Strait were “as irreconcilable as fire and water.” Trump struck a much warmer and more personal tone during the public portion of the talks, repeatedly praising Xi and describing him as a “great leader.”
“Sometimes people don’t like me saying it, but I say it anyway,” Trump said. The U.S. president also described the summit as potentially “the biggest summit ever” and said relations between the two countries could become “better than ever before.”
Trade, Iran, and Technology
According to official statements and media reports, discussions covered a wide range of issues, including trade, artificial intelligence, energy cooperation, fentanyl trafficking, rare earth supplies, and global security concerns.
Economic issues were a major focus of the talks, with both sides discussing market access, tariffs, and increased Chinese purchases of U.S. goods, including agricultural products, oil, liquefied natural gas, and Boeing aircraft.
The leaders also discussed the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global energy supplies. Both sides reportedly agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open and free from militarization or restrictions on international shipping.
The U.S. and China also agreed that Iran should not obtain a nuclear weapon, according to meeting readouts.

Technology and artificial intelligence were also part of the discussions amid growing competition between Washington and Beijing in advanced industries and semiconductor development.
Despite the broad agenda, no major new agreements were announced on the first day of the summit. Instead, officials from both countries presented the talks as part of a broader effort to manage tensions and maintain communication between the two powers.
Rubio Participates in Summit Events
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated in the larger delegation meetings and attended the state banquet alongside other senior U.S. officials.
While separate detailed talks between Marco Rubio and Wang Yi were not publicly disclosed on Thursday, both men were seen interacting during the summit events.
Chinese officials had earlier acknowledged Rubio’s participation despite past tensions and sanctions issues between Beijing and the American diplomat. Rubio later stated that U.S. policy toward Taiwan remained “unchanged.”

Business and Cultural Diplomacy
Alongside the formal political meetings, the summit also included business and cultural events aimed at improving broader ties between the two countries.
Chinese President Xi also met with American business executives and told them that China’s economy would continue opening to foreign companies.
“China’s door will only open wider,” Xi said during the meeting. Trump and Xi also visited Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven together later in the day.
Trump praised the site and described it as “a great place” while complimenting China’s history and culture.
The visit echoed previous efforts by both governments to use cultural diplomacy alongside formal negotiations during major state visits.

State Banquet Highlights Cooperation
The day concluded with a large state banquet hosted by Xi at the Great Hall of the People, attended by senior officials and leading business figures from both countries.
During his toast, Xi described China-U.S. ties as “the most important bilateral relationship in the world.” He also linked both countries’ national goals together, saying that “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.”
Trump thanked Xi for what he called a “magnificent welcome like none other” and formally invited Xi and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan to visit the White House later this year.
Focused on Stability
While the meetings produced no major agreements, analysts said the overall tone remained noticeably positive compared to previous periods of heightened tension between Washington and Beijing.
Both governments appeared focused on avoiding further deterioration in relations while maintaining dialogue on sensitive issues.
However, major disagreements remain unresolved, particularly regarding Taiwan, trade restrictions, and strategic competition in technology and security. The summit is expected to continue on May 15 with additional meetings and discussions between officials from both countries.
