China has revealed an upgraded version of its Y-9 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) patrol aircraft, showcasing new sensors and improved detection capabilities as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) expands its ability to monitor and counter underwater threats in the South China Sea.
The upgraded aircraft recently appeared during anti-submarine training exercises conducted by a naval aviation unit under the PLA Southern Theater Command.
The drills marked the first public appearance of the improved variant after the Y-9 anti-submarine aircraft made its debut during China’s 2025 Victory Day military parade.
The latest modifications suggest that China is accelerating efforts to strengthen its maritime surveillance network, particularly in waters where submarine operations remain a major strategic challenge.
New Sensors Boost Submarine Detection Capabilities
The upgraded Y-9 appears to feature a new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar mounted beneath the aircraft’s nose, providing wider coverage, longer detection ranges, and improved tracking capabilities compared with earlier versions.
The aircraft has also received a redesigned magnetic anomaly detector (MAD), a critical sensor used in anti-submarine warfare. MAD systems detect small changes in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by the metallic structure of submerged submarines, allowing aircraft to locate underwater targets after narrowing down their possible positions.
According to Chinese military expert Zhang Junshe, the new, smaller MAD system reduces interference caused by the aircraft itself, improves maintenance efficiency, and increases detection performance.

The aircraft also carries multiple sonobuoys along both sides of its fuselage. These underwater sensors can be deployed across large areas to create a network capable of listening for submarine activity.
The upgraded Y-9 can reportedly launch up to 100 sonobuoys during a single mission, forming an underwater surveillance zone covering dozens of kilometers.
Together, the improved radar, MAD system, and sonobuoy capabilities provide the aircraft with a more advanced submarine search and tracking role.
Designed for the Challenges of the South China Sea
China’s focus on improving anti-submarine warfare capabilities is closely linked to the strategic environment of the South China Sea, one of the world’s most contested maritime regions.
The South China Sea presents significant challenges for submarine detection because of its deep waters, complex underwater geography, and changing ocean conditions. Some areas exceed depths of 1,000 meters, making underwater tracking significantly more difficult.
Chinese military analysts said the upgraded Y-9 is designed to address these challenges by improving submarine search, attack coordination, and battlefield survivability.
Unlike the shallower waters of the East China Sea and Yellow Sea, the South China Sea requires more advanced sensors and longer-range patrol aircraft to maintain effective maritime awareness.
The aircraft’s improvements indicate that China is seeking greater control over its surrounding maritime environment and stronger capabilities to detect foreign submarines operating near its strategic waters.

From Parade Display to Operational Training
The Y-9 anti-submarine aircraft was first publicly displayed during China’s 2025 Victory Day military parade alongside other special mission aircraft variants, including electronic reconnaissance and radar-jamming versions.
The Y-9 platform has become an important foundation for China’s development of specialized military aircraft. Beijing has developed multiple variants based on the same airframe, allowing it to perform different missions including intelligence gathering, electronic warfare, and maritime surveillance.
Compared with the older Y-8 anti-submarine patrol aircraft, the Y-9 provides greater range, a larger combat radius, increased payload capacity, and longer endurance.
These improvements allow the aircraft to remain airborne for longer periods while conducting wide-area maritime patrol missions.
Chinese military officials said the aircraft has now entered operational training, indicating that it has achieved an initial combat capability and can perform basic submarine search and attack missions.
Realistic Combat Training Signals Growing Readiness
The PLA Southern Theater Command recently conducted anti-submarine exercises involving multiple patrol aircraft, including both Y-8 and Y-9 platforms.
The exercises were designed to simulate realistic battlefield conditions rather than routine training scenarios. Pilots faced unexpected situations, including electronic interference, equipment failures, and changing operational conditions.
The drills focused on improving coordination between aircraft and other military units while enhancing decision-making during complex maritime operations.

Such training reflects China’s broader effort to move its military from equipment development toward realistic combat preparation.
For anti-submarine warfare, coordination between aircraft, surface ships, submarines, and maritime surveillance systems is essential. Modern naval conflicts increasingly depend on the ability to detect enemy submarines before they can threaten naval forces.
Growing Role in China’s Maritime Strategy
The upgraded Y-9 comes as China continues expanding its naval capabilities and strengthening its presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Submarines remain a major concern for China’s maritime security planners because advanced underwater platforms operated by regional powers, including the United States and its allies, are difficult to detect and can pose significant threats to naval operations.
Anti-submarine warfare has therefore become one of the key areas of military competition in the region.
The development of aircraft such as the Y-9 suggests that China is investing not only in larger naval platforms but also in the surveillance systems required to protect them.
While aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines often receive more attention, anti-submarine aircraft play a crucial role in controlling maritime space by providing early warning and tracking capabilities.

The upgraded Y-9 represents another step in China’s effort to build a more integrated maritime defense network.
With improved sensors, longer endurance, and greater operational flexibility, the aircraft strengthens the PLA’s ability to monitor underwater activity and respond to potential submarine threats.
