The United States Navy has awarded defense company Northrop Grumman a $233 million contract to manufacture and deliver a new advanced lightweight torpedo for the U.S. Navy, marking a significant step in modernizing undersea warfare capabilities.
The company announced on January 12, 2025, that it will produce the MK54 MOD 2 advanced lightweight torpedo, a next-generation weapon system designed to significantly enhance lethality, performance, and operational flexibility compared with earlier variants currently in service.
The contract covers proof of manufacturing, qualification phases, and the delivery of multiple torpedoes for qualification and testing purposes. It reflects the U.S. Navy’s continued focus on upgrading its anti-submarine warfare capabilities to address evolving undersea challenges.
Under the agreement, Northrop Grumman will conduct integration and initial proof of manufacturing at its facility in Plymouth, Minnesota, as well as at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in Rocket Center, West Virginia.
The company said its advanced facilities and established production infrastructure will allow it to meet the Navy’s requirements efficiently and on an accelerated timeline. The work will focus not only on producing the torpedo itself but also on ensuring that manufacturing processes meet stringent performance, safety, and reliability standards before the system enters broader production.
The contract’s emphasis on qualification testing highlights the importance placed on validating the torpedo’s design and performance before operational deployment, particularly given the technological changes introduced in the MOD 2 variant.
Vice president of armament systems at Northrop Grumman, Dave Fine, emphasized the company’s experience and production capacity in announcing the award. He said, “This new weapon will provide U.S. and allied sailors with a next-generation response to counter the most advanced undersea threats.”
“Northrop Grumman is leveraging over 80 years of innovative torpedo technology, combined with our capacity and speed in delivery, to accelerate the design qualification and manufacturing for the advanced lightweight torpedo,” Fine added.
Next-Generation Warhead and Enhanced Lethality
A central feature of the MK54 MOD 2 is its custom-designed warhead, developed by Northrop Grumman to improve lethality against advanced undersea targets.
The new warhead and associated processing technologies represent a major upgrade over those used in the MK54 MOD 0 and MOD 1 variants currently in the U.S. Navy’s inventory.
According to the Northrop Grumman statement, the MOD 2 is intended to significantly enhance the effectiveness of the existing MK54 fleet by introducing improved target detection, classification, and engagement capabilities. These improvements are designed to ensure effectiveness against quieter, faster, and deeper-diving submarines that pose increasing challenges to traditional anti-submarine weapons.

Collaboration with Australia
The MK54 MOD 2 was developed under a cooperative development agreement with the Australian Defense Force, led by the U.S. Navy. The collaboration reflects the growing emphasis on allied cooperation in addressing shared maritime security challenges, particularly in undersea warfare.
Through this partnership, the MOD 2 program benefits from shared technical expertise and operational insights, helping ensure that the weapon meets the needs of both U.S. and allied naval forces. Technical Capabilities and Design Improvements
The MK54 MOD 2 is designed to track, classify, and engage underwater targets across all ocean environments. It is intended to perform effectively in both deep and shallow waters, addressing one of the longstanding challenges in anti-submarine warfare.
One of the most significant technical changes in the MOD 2 is the replacement of the legacy Otto Fuel II engine with a Stored Chemical Energy Propulsion System. This system utilizes a lithium boiler to generate steam, which drives a turbine, resulting in higher performance and enhanced diving capabilities.
The new propulsion system not only improves operational effectiveness but also aligns with broader efforts to modernize propulsion technologies used in naval weapons.
Another key design objective of the MK54 MOD 2 is weight reduction. By making the torpedo lighter, the program aims to expand the range of platforms capable of deploying it. This could potentially include a wider array of aircraft and unmanned systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, increasing flexibility in how and where the weapon can be employed.
