The United States has approved a major defense deal with Israel, awarding Boeing an $8.6 billion contract to produce advanced F-15IA fighter jets for the Israeli Air Force.

The agreement covers the design, integration, testing, production, and delivery of 25 new aircraft, with an option for Israel to acquire an additional 25 jets in the coming years.

The deal represents one of the largest defense procurement agreements between Washington and Tel Aviv and underscores the depth of military cooperation between the two countries amid heightened regional tensions.

According to the Pentagon, the contract falls under the Foreign Military Sales framework and allows the U.S. Air Force and Boeing to proceed with the program following formal approval. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2031 and continue through the end of 2035, with aircraft expected to arrive in batches of four to six per year.

The F-15IA is an Israel-specific variant of Boeing’s latest F-15EX fighter jet, an upgraded version of the long-serving F-15 platform that has formed the backbone of Israel’s air power for decades.

Once the current agreement and potential option are fully exercised, Israel’s fleet of F-15IA aircraft will rise to 50, supplementing the 66 F-15 variants already in service with the Israeli Air Force.

Israel’s existing inventory includes earlier-generation F-15A, F-15C, and F-15I models, alongside other platforms such as F-16s and F-35 stealth fighters. Military planners view the new acquisition as critical to maintaining air superiority and ensuring long-range strike capabilities in an increasingly contested regional environment.

The F-15IA will be based on the design first developed specifically for Israel in the 1990s, but with substantial enhancements. The new variant will feature fly-by-wire flight controls, advanced avionics, long-range strike capabilities, and a significantly increased payload capacity of up to 14 tons.

The aircraft will also integrate Israeli-developed defense systems and weapons, reflecting Israel’s longstanding emphasis on customizing foreign platforms to meet its operational requirements.

Operational Role and Regional Context

The F-15 remains Israel’s most relied-upon fighter aircraft, having played a central role in recent military operations. Israeli officials have confirmed that F-15 and F-15I aircraft were among the jets used during last year’s 12-day conflict with Iran, as well as in operations targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon and Houthi-linked sites in Yemen.

With the F-15IA program, Israel aims to reinforce its ability to conduct deep-strike missions, deter adversaries, and respond rapidly across multiple theaters. The new aircraft’s extended range and heavy weapons capacity are seen as particularly valuable given Israel’s strategic concerns regarding Iran and its regional partners.

The deal was initially agreed upon in November 2024, when Israel placed an order valued at $5.2 billion for 25 aircraft. The higher value announced this week reflects the inclusion of options for additional jets, as well as associated development and integration costs.

Funding for the program is drawn from a multiyear U.S.-Israel defense assistance framework that has long underpinned Israel’s access to advanced American military technology.

Boeing Production and Timeline

Boeing will manufacture the aircraft at its production facilities in St. Louis, Missouri, with the overall program expected to conclude by the end of 2035. While the company has not publicly commented on the contract, the deal provides a significant boost to Boeing’s military aviation portfolio at a time when global demand for advanced fighter aircraft remains strong.

Powered by twin GE Aerospace F110 engines delivering a combined thrust of 81,000 pounds, the F-15EX platform is capable of flying at speeds up to Mach 2.5, reaching altitudes of 50,000 feet, and carrying a payload of nearly 30,000 pounds. These performance characteristics make the aircraft one of the most heavily armed and versatile fighters currently in production.

Trump and Netanyahu Meeting in Florida

The announcement of the F-15IA contract followed closely on the heels of a high-profile meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

The two leaders held talks covering regional security, defense cooperation, and broader strategic alignment before addressing reporters in a joint appearance.

While neither side officially linked the aircraft deal to the meeting, the timing has drawn attention, with analysts viewing it as a signal of renewed momentum in U.S.-Israel defense relations under Trump’s leadership.

The meeting marked one of Netanyahu’s most significant engagements with the U.S. president in recent months and took place against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts involving Israel and its adversaries.

During the press conference, Trump reiterated his administration’s commitment to Israel’s security and emphasized the importance of maintaining Israel’s qualitative military edge. Netanyahu, for his part, highlighted the strategic value of U.S. support as Israel navigates what he described as a complex and evolving threat environment.

Broader Signals on US Defense Policy

The meeting also produced remarks that underscored the broader implications of U.S. arms policy in the region. Trump stated that his administration is “thinking about it very seriously” when asked about the possibility of selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkiye.

Turkiye was removed from the F-35 program in 2019 following its purchase of Russian missile defense systems, a move that strained relations with Washington.

For Israel, the approval of up to 50 F-15IA jets reinforces its long-term military planning and provides reassurance of continued U.S. backing. The aircraft are expected to serve for decades, shaping Israel’s air combat capabilities well into the mid-21st century.

For the United States, the deal reflects a continued reliance on arms sales as a tool of strategic influence, alliance management, and industrial support. It also signals that, despite shifting global priorities, the U.S.-Israel defense relationship remains a cornerstone of American policy in the Middle East.

As deliveries approach in the coming decade, the F-15IA program is likely to remain a focal point in discussions about regional military balance, U.S. arms exports, and the evolving nature of air power in modern conflicts.
