The Spanish Navy has deployed all five of its F-100 Alvaro de Bazan-class frigates at the same time for NATO and allied operations, marking a rare operational milestone as the fleet operates simultaneously across multiple national and international missions.

In a statement, the Spanish Navy said that the air-defense escort ships are currently at sea in different strategic theatres, taking part in NATO operations, allied naval task groups, and Spanish national defense activities. The deployment highlights Spain’s ability to sustain a high operational tempo while supporting multinational maritime security missions.

According to the Navy, keeping the entire class at sea at the same time presents a significant logistical and planning challenge. The effort requires close coordination between ship crews, shore-based support units, and the industrial supply chain, particularly at Ferrol Naval Base, which handles much of the maintenance for the class.

The Navy said sustaining simultaneous deployments ensures the continued readiness of ships that have been operating in demanding environments for more than two decades. It described the milestone as evidence of the reliability of the F-100 fleet and the support structure behind it.

The operational surge comes as Spain advances the Mid-Life Modernization Program for the F-100 class. A contract for the upgrade effort was signed in December 2025 and is valued at €3.2 billion, with work scheduled to continue through 2036.

The program includes upgrades to both platform systems and combat systems, including modernization of the Aegis combat system and measures to address obsolescence and prepare the ships for future operational scenarios.

Designed and built in Ferrol, the F-100 frigates were the first in Europe to incorporate the Aegis combat system. More than 20 years after entering service, they remain among the continent’s most capable air-defense escort vessels.

The ships’ capabilities have been demonstrated through regular participation in live-fire missile exercises such as Formidable Shield, integration into NATO standing naval groups, and deployments to strategically important maritime regions.

Multiple High-Profile Missions

Each of the five ships is currently operating in a separate mission with allied forces and national defense structures.

  • The frigate Alvaro de Bazan (F-101) is integrated into the French aircraft carrier strike group centered on the carrier Charles de Gaulle and is participating in the high-intensity, multi-domain Orion 26 exercise.
  • Almirante Juan de Borbon (F-102) is serving as the flagship of NATO’s Standing Naval Maritime Group One (SNMG1), leading one of the alliance’s key maritime formations.
  • Blas de Lezo (F-103) is operating in the United States as part of the U.S. Navy’s COMPTUEX certification exercise, a demanding training program used to prepare carrier strike groups for deployment.
  • Méndez Núñez (F-104) is supporting the joint activation of Eagle Eye as part of Spain’s national air defense system, acting as a naval platform within a broader integrated air-defense network.
  • Cristobal Colon (F-105) is deployed to the Baltic Sea for NATO’s Steadfast Dart 26 exercise, operating alongside allied naval forces in a region of heightened strategic importance.

“The five Alvaro de Bazan-class frigates operate simultaneously in different deployments, thanks to their suitability to interoperate with other allied navies, a solid logistic support, and the effectiveness of their capabilities as escorts,” the Navy said.

The Navy added that maintaining all five ships on deployment at once reflects a sustained effort by crews, maintenance teams, and defense industry partners to keep the vessels operational and ready for multinational missions.

Coordination between the Navy, defense authorities, and industry partners has been critical in ensuring availability and readiness across the class.

The simultaneous deployment also demonstrates the F-100 class’s interoperability with allied navies, including the United States and France, and its ability to operate within NATO command structures as well as Spain’s joint military framework with its army and air force.

Officials said the current situation represents one of the clearest examples of the fleet’s operational reliability and the effectiveness of the support system behind it.

The Navy described the milestone as a sign of Spain’s commitment to maintaining the F-100 class as a core element of its naval capabilities for decades to come, even as modernization work continues.

With all five frigates deployed across different strategic scenarios, the Spanish Navy said the fleet is demonstrating its capacity to operate globally, support allied operations, and contribute to collective defense while preparing for future maritime challenges.
