Europe, News No Comments on Russia strikes more than 50 missiles causing water and power outages in Kyiv

Water and power supply in Kyiv have been affected badly after Russia’s recent strike on the city on October 31, 2022. More than 270,000 apartments in the city are without water and electricity.

Russia launched more than 50 missiles toward the Ukrainian capital targeting several tactical facilities. An energy facility was also hit in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. At least thirteen were reported injured as the result of the recent attack however no casualties have been reported so far.

According to the Ukrainian defense ministry, 44 of the 50 cruise missiles were countered through the air defense system. The ministry also specified that the missiles were launched from Russia’s Rostov region and from the Russian naval fleet in the Caspian Sea.

The mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko released a statement regarding the city’s power and water outage situation. He stated that the shortage and outage is a result of Russia’s missile attacks that damaged critical urban infrastructure. He initially reported that more than 80% of the city’s consumers had no access to power to water and more than 350,000 apartments in the city were in a complete blackout.

Klitschko later stated that power has been restored in some areas while the water supply is also being repaired. Long lines of local residents and citizens were seen at some public water supplies as people desperately collected groundwater from the hand pumps.

No direct missile hits were recorded directly inside Kyiv or any of its neighboring cities. Some missile strikes were reported in the central Vinnytsia region, as well as Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia in the southeast, and Lviv in western Ukraine. A facility at the Dnipro hydroelectric power plant in the Zaporizhzhia region was also reportedly hit. Overall, about 18 facilities were targeted in 10 different regions. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that “hundreds of localities in seven regions” were left without power.

Moscow’s recent wave of attacks comes only two days after Russia reported a ‘massive’ drone attack on its Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol. According to the Russian Navy, Ukraine used at least nine drones to carry out a massive attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol on October 29, 2022, however, no photos or any other substantial proof was provided to back the claims.

Sevastopol is the largest city in the Crimean Peninsula and home to Russia’s most active military and commercial port located in the region. Many analysts believe that the current attack on urban infrastructure is Russia’s response to the reported drone attacks.
