At least 304 dead, 1,800 hurt as powerful quake slams Haiti

A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Haiti on Saturday, killing at least 304 people and injuring at least 1,800 others and destroying hundreds of homes.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he was rushing aid to areas where towns were destroyed and hospitals overwhelmed with incoming patients. He declared a one-month national state of emergency.

“The most important thing is to recover as many survivors as possible under the rubble,” said Henry. “We have learned that the local hospitals, in particular that of Les Cayes, are overwhelmed with wounded, fractured people.”

The government would not seek international help until the extent of the damages was known, he said.

At least 304 deaths and 1,800 injured so far, figures which are expected to rise, according to Haiti’s Civil Protection.

Initial reports indicate more than 700 collapsed buildings, including hospitals and schools, at least 3,778 homes destroyed and significant damages to infrastructure and roads.
