Pakistan government finalized an agreement with CSOC of China to procure 8 Hangor-class submarines during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pakistan in 2015.

According to the contract terms, four submarines will be manufactured in China, while the remaining four will be built in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) through a Transfer of Technology arrangement.

All Hangor-class submarines will be equipped with advanced weaponry and sensor systems, enabling them to engage targets effectively at long distances, the public relations department of Pakistani military said in a statement.

Hangor-class submarine specs and features

The Hangor-class submarine, derived from the Chinese Type 039A Yuan class and named after the historic PNS Hangor S-131, the lead submarine of its class that played a significant role during Pakistan’s 1971 war with India.

The newly launched Hangor-class submarine’s propulsion system operates through diesel engines while surfaced or snorkeling, utilizing air for combustion. However, when submerged, it relies on a battery charged by the diesel engine for power.

The Hangor-class submarine is equipped with four diesel engines to facilitate its operations. Additionally, it incorporates an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, greatly enhancing its endurance and allowing for extended periods underwater.

As an attack submarine, it has been crafted for the task of engaging and neutralizing other submarines or surface vessels through the deployment of torpedoes or, in contemporary warfare, cruise missiles.

The Hangor-class submarine is equipped with six 21-inch torpedo tubes and possesses the ability to launch anti-ship missiles. Notably, it can also deploy the Babur-3 subsonic cruise missile. The submarine boasts an impressive range of 450 kilometers.
