German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House for a bilateral meeting on June 5, 2025. The meeting marked Chancellor Merz’s first official visit to the United States since assuming office in May 2025.
The meeting between the leaders of the United States and Germany focused on NATO commitments, trade relations, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During their discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the NATO.
U.S. President Trump emphasized the importance of the alliance, stating, “It’s an honor to have you. We have a great mandate from the people, and part of our mandate is we’re gonna have a great relationship with [Germany]. Thank you very much for being here.”
Merz echoed the sentiment, highlighting the need for continued collaboration to ensure the security of member nations. He noted that the U.S. administration is open to discussion, listens, and is willing to accept differing opinions.

Addressing the Ukraine conflict
The ongoing war in Ukraine was a central topic of discussion. President Trump expressed his views on the conflict, comparing it to a playground dispute: “It’s like two children fighting in a park.”
He suggested that continued fighting might be necessary before peace is achievable, indicating that the conflict may need to persist for a while before a resolution is possible.
Merz, however, emphasized the urgency of ending the war and called for increased pressure on Russia to cease hostilities. He stated, “I am for stopping killing, I think we both agree on how terrible this war is, we are both looking for ways to stop it very soon.”
He that President Trump that he is the key person in the world who can contribute to ending the war by putting pressure on Russia.
Merz raised urgent concerns about Russia’s accelerating military build-up, urging U.S. lawmakers to recognize the full scale of the Kremlin’s rearmament. Speaking at a business conference in Berlin following his White House meeting with President Donald Trump, Merz revealed that he had met with several senators on Capitol Hill. He stated, “I met with some senators on Capitol Hill and told them to please look at the rearmament Russia is doing.”
Merz highlighted that Russia has ramped up arms production since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, converting defense factories to 24-hour operations and signing military supply agreements with North Korea and Iran.

He emphasized that such developments could soon place Moscow in a position to threaten NATO territory directly, despite Russia’s insistence that its war in Ukraine is a “special military operation” aimed at self-defense against a hostile West. Russia has raised its 2025 defense budget to levels unseen since the Cold War.
During his visit, Merz sought to persuade President Trump of the strategic importance of continued U.S. support for Ukraine and Europe. He was reassured by Trump’s “resounding no” when asked whether the United States planned to withdraw from NATO.
Enhancing trade relations
Trade relations between the United States and Germany were also on the agenda. Chancellor Merz highlighted the significant contributions of German automakers to the U.S. economy, noting that German manufacturers produce approximately 400,000 vehicles annually in the United States. He advocated for balanced trade and the reduction of tariffs to benefit both economies.
Following the meeting, Merz announced plans to propose a reciprocal car tariff agreement with the United States. Under the proposed deal, U.S.-made cars would be allowed into Europe duty-free, provided the U.S. reciprocates by waiving tariffs on an equivalent number of European vehicles.

In a gesture of goodwill, Chancellor Merz presented President Trump with a framed copy of his grandfather’s German birth certificate, highlighting Trump’s historical roots in Germany.
Pro-American stance
Merz has long been considered one of the most pro-American politicians in Germany. He has been the chairman of the Atlantik-Brücke association, which promotes German-American friendship and Atlanticism. Merz counts former U.S. President Ronald Reagan as one of his role models and has traveled to the U.S. over 100 times.
The meeting between Chancellor Merz and President Trump underscored the enduring partnership between Germany and the United States. While differences in perspectives, particularly regarding the Ukraine conflict, were evident, both leaders demonstrated a commitment to dialogue and cooperation on key international issues.
The discussions between German Chancellor Merz and U.S. President Trump on NATO, trade, and security reflect a mutual interest in strengthening transatlantic ties amid global challenges.
