Denmark’s Ministry of Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization signed a contract with Swedish defense firm Saab for the delivery of Carl-Gustaf M4 weapons, associated ammunition, and training equipment.

The deal is valued at approximately $54 million (SEK 510 million), with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2028. According to Saab, the agreement covers the weapon system, ammunition, and training materials to support Danish forces.

Denmark has used the Carl-Gustaf system, locally known as Dysekanon, since the 1970s. The country received its first M4 variant in 2022 as part of broader infantry modernization efforts.

Saab noted that the new contract builds on this long-standing relationship, ensuring Danish forces continue to operate with a modern and fully supported weapon system.

The acquisition aligns with Denmark’s broader defense modernization strategy, which seeks to strengthen the mobility, precision, and operational flexibility of infantry units.

System Overview

The Carl-Gustaf M4 is a man-portable, reusable recoilless rifle designed for modern battlefield conditions. Introduced in 2014, the weapon weighs under seven kilograms and measures less than one meter in length, allowing enhanced maneuverability in urban or confined environments.

The system can be used with a variety of ammunition to engage armored vehicles, fortified positions, and personnel targets with precision. Its design emphasizes ease of transport and rapid deployment, allowing infantry units to adapt quickly to changing combat scenarios.

Capabilities and Ammunition

The M4 is compatible with a wide range of ammunition, including anti-armor, anti-structure, multi-role, smoke, and illumination rounds. It can fire programmable and guided munitions, such as the HE 448 and the Guided Multipurpose Munition, which enable accurate engagement of stationary and moving targets at ranges exceeding 2,500 meters.

The system’s flexibility allows operators to select the most suitable ammunition type for specific mission requirements, enhancing operational effectiveness and survivability in complex environments.

“Carl-Gustaf M4 offers unmatched precision, portability, and a wide range of ammunition options, ensuring that Danish forces are well-equipped to handle diverse and evolving threats,” said Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics. “We look forward to continuing our long-standing support for the Danish Armed Forces,” he added.

Operational Significance

The new order is expected to maintain Denmark’s operational readiness and ensure interoperability with NATO partners who also operate the Carl-Gustaf system. By acquiring additional launchers, ammunition, and training kits, Denmark aims to reinforce the flexibility and adaptability of its infantry across various missions.

Saab emphasized that the deliveries will sustain system availability and provide continued training support for Danish units. The M4’s versatility is particularly valuable for multinational operations, where standardized equipment supports seamless cooperation and joint training exercises.

Denmark’s procurement supports broader NATO objectives by ensuring that member states maintain compatible infantry systems. The Carl-Gustaf M4 is widely used across Europe, allowing Denmark to participate effectively in alliance operations and combined exercises.

By standardizing on a system shared by multiple partners, Danish forces can more easily integrate into multinational missions, enhancing both strategic coordination and tactical effectiveness.

Delivery Timeline

Deliveries under the contract are planned between 2026 and 2028. During this period, the weapons, ammunition, and training materials will be handed over to the Danish Ministry of Defence.

Saab indicated that the phased schedule would allow for smooth integration and uninterrupted operational readiness for Danish forces. The company also highlighted ongoing training support to ensure that personnel are fully familiar with system capabilities and operational procedures.

The $54 million contract reinforces Denmark’s long-term cooperation with Saab and its commitment to maintaining modern and flexible ground forces.

The Carl-Gustaf M4 systems enhance Denmark’s ability to respond to evolving security challenges, providing troops with one of the most versatile infantry support weapons currently in service.

By combining advanced firepower with mobility and precision, the acquisition strengthens both Denmark’s national defense and its role within NATO operations.
