{"id":9811,"date":"2022-05-27T14:16:27","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T12:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/?p=9811"},"modified":"2022-05-27T14:17:07","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T12:17:07","slug":"china-and-russia-veto-new-un-sanctions-on-north-korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/china-and-russia-veto-new-un-sanctions-on-north-korea\/","title":{"rendered":"China and Russia veto new UN sanctions on North Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>China and Russia vetoed a U.S.-drafted United Nations resolution on May 26 to impose tough new sanctions on North Korea for its spate of intercontinental ballistic missile launches this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining 13 council members all voted in favor of the resolution that proposed banning tobacco and oil exports to North Korea. It would also have blacklisted the Lazarus hacking group, which the U.S. says is tied to North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed disappointment at the vote, calling North Korea\u2019s 23 ballistic missile launches this year \u201ca grave threat to international peace and security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the first time in 15 years, a UN Security Council member has used a veto to stop the council from fulfilling its responsibility to hold the DPRK (North Korea) accountable for its unlawful proliferation and tests,\u201d the US envoy <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/usun.usmission.gov\/joint-statement-following-a-vote-on-a-u-s-drafted-un-security-council-resolution-on-the-dprk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">said in a statement<\/span><\/a> made on behalf of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that \u201cThese tests are dangerous. They are destabilizing. They are a clear violation of multiple Security Council resolutions and seek to undermine the global nonproliferation regime&#8230;The failure to adopt a new resolution undermines the Security Council\u2019s previous actions to which they\u2019ve agreed unanimously, and will only embolden the DPRK to conduct further provocations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the veto, the Security Council missed the opportunity \u201cto restrict the DPRK\u2019s unlawful WMD and ballistic missile advancements while also helping to improve the humanitarian situation of the people of the DPRK,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>China urges U.S. to take &#8220;meaningful, practical actions&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China&#8217;s U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun defended Beijing&#8217;s opposition to new sanctions against North Korea saying China believes that \u201cdialogue and negotiations are the only viable way to resolve the problem.\u201d He called on the United States to take \u201cmeaningful, practical actions\u201d to resume its dialogue with the country and find a political solution to the situation on the Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do not think additional sanctions will be helpful in responding to the current situation,\u201d he told reporters Thursday. \u201cSecurity Council sanctions are a means, not an end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia echoed similar views and said that further sanctions would create a humanitarian crisis for the North Korean people. (Image Credit: Alexei Druzhinin\/Sputnik\/via AP)<\/em><\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North Korea launches ICBM after Biden Asia summit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North Korea has conducted a number of missile launches this year, from hypersonic weapons to test-firing its largest intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) for the first time in nearly five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 25, North Korea test-launched three missiles \u2013 a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile and two shorter-range weapons into the sea.
