It\u2019s expected to be fielded by 2025, the Lockheed Martin press release read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice President of Upper Tier Integrated Air and Missile Defense at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Dan Nimblett said \u201cThis award demonstrates the U.S. government\u2019s continued confidence in the THAAD Weapon System and in its unique endo- and exo-atmospheric defense capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nimblett emphasized that \u201cWith 16 of 16 successful flight test intercepts and recent combat success clearly documenting the effectiveness of THAAD, adding an eighth battery will further enhance readiness against existing and evolving ballistic missile threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first THAAD Battery (Alpha Battery, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade) was activated in May 2008 and the seventh THAAD battery was activated by the U.S. Army in December 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Thaad-system-Lockheed-Martin.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Thaad-system-Lockheed-Martin.jpg?resize=833%2C447&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8189\" width=\"833\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Thaad-system-Lockheed-Martin.jpg?w=690&amp;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Thaad-system-Lockheed-Martin.jpg?resize=300%2C161&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><sup>Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. (Image Credit: Lockheed Martin)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the defense firm statement, \u201cTHAAD is a highly effective, combat-proven defense against short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTHAAD is the only U.S. system designed to intercept targets outside and inside the atmosphere. The system uses Hit-to-Kill technology to destroy a threat with direct impact neutralizing lethal payloads before they reach protected assets on the ground.
