North Korean leader Kim Jong Un convened an important meeting of the ruling party on December 27, to discuss and make decisions on major strategic and tactical policies for the next year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to North Korean media reports on December 28, upon the authorization of the politburo, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the fourth plenary meeting of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers\u2019 Party of Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, the party and government officials discussed ways to cope with the ongoing economic crisis caused by the international sanctions over the country\u2019s nuclear weapons program, lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and natural disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Korean state media said on December 28 that participants at the fourth plenary meeting will \u201creview the implementation of the party and state’s main policies in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main objective of the meeting is to \u201cdiscuss and decide on the strategic and tactical policies and practical tasks for dynamically guiding the struggle of our Party and people to usher in a new period of the development of socialist construction to the next stage of victory,\u201d the North Korean media added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In view of the fact that Kim Jong Un announced the country’s \u201cnew strategic line,\u201d such as the Byungjin policy, which reflects the changes in the internal and external environment, this plenary meeting is considered as an important gathering in the country, during which North Korean leadership is expected to make major decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting comes at a time when North Korea is commemorating Kim Jong Un’s 10th anniversary as the supreme military commander after his father Kim Jong Il passed away in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a South Korean website that monitors North Korea, NK News, \u201cKim has used speeches around the new year holiday in the past to make friendly overtures to the U.S. and South Korea, but also to reveal nuclear weapon developments and other military plans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Unification of South Korea highlighted the importance of the upcoming year and pointed out that North Korea would \u201chave to continue its impetus for the five-year national economic plan by at least setting a higher goal in each field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The South Korean unification ministry also added that it hopes North Korea will \u201cstart the new year by opening the door for dialogue with the international community, and take a step forward for engagement and cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
