Iraq’s prime minister calls for calm after surviving ‘assassination attempt’<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iraq\u2019s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has survived an assassination attempt after drones laden with explosives targeted his residence in Baghdad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister remained unhurt in the attack but six of his bodyguards were injured in an apparent assassination attempt, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack sparked tensions in the country amid violent protests by Iran-backed militia groups which refused to accept last month’s parliamentary\u00a0elections. Final election results are yet\u00a0to be\u00a0announced\u00a0almost three weeks after\u00a0Iraqis\u00a0cast their votes on October 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mustafa al-Kadhimi appealed for \u201ccalm and restraint\u201d after the attack. \u201cI\u2019m doing fine, praise be to God, and I call for calm and restraint on the part of everyone for the good of Iraq,\u201d he said on Twitter. \u201cCowardly missiles and drones don\u2019t build nations\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iraqi Interior Ministry official Maj. Gen. Saad Maan said that the prime minister\u2019s house in the fortified Green Zone was targeted by three armed drones. Iraqi security forces shot down two of the drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iraq\u2019s President\u00a0Barham Salih described the attack as a prelude to a coup. \u201cWe cannot accept that Iraq will be dragged into chaos and a coup against its constitutional system,\u201d he said in a tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no immediate claim for the attack. The Iraqi security officials said it was premature to say who carried out the attack before the investigation results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several countries including the US, UK, France, Turkey, Pakistan, Qatar, Jordan, UAE and Bahrain condemned the atttak and expressed solidarity with the Iraqi government and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq also condemned in the \u201cstrongest terms the assassination attempt\u201d against Kadhimi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
