{"id":688,"date":"2015-01-16T11:56:42","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T11:56:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=688"},"modified":"2022-08-19T17:45:57","modified_gmt":"2022-08-19T15:45:57","slug":"romania-is-a-strong-ally-nato-secretary-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/romania-is-a-strong-ally-nato-secretary-general\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Romania is a strong Ally&#8217;: NATO Secretary General"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels, Belgium \u2014&nbsp;NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in Brussels on Friday (16 January 2015) to discuss the Alliance\u2019s response to current security challenges and the importance of investing in defence.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Stoltenberg thanked President Iohannis for his personal commitment to the Alliance, Romania\u2019s substantial contributions to NATO, and the recent decision to spend 2 % of Gross Domestic Product on defence by 2017. \u201cRomania is a staunch and strong NATO Ally,\u201d the Secretary General said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Stoltenberg said Romanian troops had made a remarkable contributions over many years to the NATO-led combat mission in Afghanistan, and continue to contribute substantially to the new mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>When I met Romanian soldiers in Kandahar<\/em>,\u201d he said, \u201c<em>I was impressed by their professionalism and dedication&#8221;.<\/em> He stressed that Romania also plays an important part in other key areas, such as building stability in Kosovo and NATO\u2019s missile defence system.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary General thanked Romania for its commitment to keep NATO\u2019s neighbourhood stable&nbsp;by assisting Ukraine through the trust fund on cyber security and supporting the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary General Stoltenberg and President Iohannis discussed the ongoing implementation of the Readiness Action Plan, which will boost the readiness of &nbsp;NATO forces to deploy at short notice.
