{"id":6838,"date":"2021-04-07T05:54:24","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T02:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=6838"},"modified":"2023-07-11T10:31:36","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T07:31:36","slug":"us-air-force-hypersonic-missile-test-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/us-air-force-hypersonic-missile-test-fails\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force hypersonic missile test fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Hypersonic ARRW booster flight test fails to launch from B-52<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first booster flight test of the U.S. Air Force\u2019s AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) failed on Monday when the test weapon did not launch from the B-52 Stratofortress bomber carrying it.<\/p>\n<p>The service acknowledged the failure as a \u201csetback\u201d for the hypersonic progress but said the test still proved valuable for the program\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ARRW program has been pushing boundaries since its inception and taking calculated risks to move this important capability forward,\u201d said Brig. Gen. Heath Collins, Armament Directorate Program Executive Officer. \u201cWhile not launching was disappointing, the recent test provided invaluable information to learn from and continue ahead. This is why we test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The missile maker Lockheed Martin did not comment on the test failure \u201cdue to the classified nature of the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe weapon system is designed to provide the ability to destroy high-value, time-sensitive targets,\u201d the Air Force said. \u201cIt will also expand precision-strike weapon systems\u2019 capabilities by enabling rapid response strikes against heavily defended land targets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military has identified hypersonics as one of the highest priority modernization and is aiming to field offensive hypersonic weapons <span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/pentagon-to-deploy-hypersonic-weapons-by-mid-2020s\/\">by the early to mid-2020s<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Defense is currently pursuing two types of hypersonic weapons technologies: boost-glide systems that place a maneuverable glide vehicle atop a ballistic missile or booster and cruise missiles that would use highspeed scramjets to travel at hypersonic speeds.
