The violence must decrease, now,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Explore\/News\/Article\/Article\/2508740\/austin-says-afghanistan-iraq-china-among-topics-at-nato-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #a80000;\">Austin said<\/span><\/a>, in his first press briefing with reporters\u00a0as Pentagon chief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told our allies that no matter what the outcome of our review, the United States will not undertake a hasty or disorderly withdrawal from <a href=\"https:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/tag\/afghanistan\/\"><span style=\"color: #a80000;\">Afghanistan<\/span><\/a>,\u201d he said referring to this week\u2019s virtual NATO meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The statement comes after the <a href=\"https:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/tag\/nato\/\"><span style=\"color: #a80000;\">NATO<\/span><\/a> Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also said that the alliance has not yet decided if its 10,000 troops in Afghanistan will leave by May this year. \u201cViolence has to be reduced and the Taliban has to stop cooperating with international terrorist groups that are planning terrorist attacks in our countries,\u201d Stoltenberg told reporters at the conclusion of the virtual NATO defense ministers meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur aim is to make sure that we have a lasting political agreement that can make it possible for us to leave in a way that doesn\u2019t undermine our main goal and that is to prevent Afghanistan from becoming once again a safe haven [for terrorists],\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/opinions_181561.htm?selectedLocale=en\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #a80000;\">NATO chief said<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 2,500 US troops and 10,000 NATO troops in Afghanistan now.
