{"id":6591,"date":"2020-10-03T18:35:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-03T18:35:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=6591"},"modified":"2020-10-04T19:51:38","modified_gmt":"2020-10-04T19:51:38","slug":"us-signs-10-year-military-cooperation-deal-with-morocco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/us-signs-10-year-military-cooperation-deal-with-morocco\/","title":{"rendered":"US signs 10-year military cooperation deal with Morocco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Esper&#8217;s North Africa tour\u00a0is aimed\u00a0at\u00a0building new alliances and strengthening old ones<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The United States has signed an accord to strengthen military cooperation with the North African kingdom which Washington considers a key ally in a region destabilized by years of conflict in Libya.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper andnd Morocco&#8217;s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita signed the 10-year agreement in Rabat, Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day visit to Morocco is part of the three North African nations tour that began in Tunisia, where a similar military accord was signed. He also visited Algeria, the first U.S. defense secretary to meet with leaders there since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>In Morocco, the United States renewed the alliance between the two nations. Morocco is a major non-NATO ally of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now more than ever, our two nations are working closely to tackle the challenges of an increasingly complex security environment ranging from counterterrorism and other transnational threats to regional instability and broader strategic challenges,&#8221; Esper said. &#8220;We do this together to promote the security, the stability and the prosperity of our shared goals and our peoples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Proud to co-sign a 10-year Roadmap for Defense Cooperation with Morocco\u2019s Minister Delegate for the Administration of National Defense, Abdellatif Loudiyi, continuing our nations\u2019 242 year-old partnership. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0ipBkIhqBn\">pic.twitter.com\/0ipBkIhqBn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dr. Mark T. Esper (@EsperDoD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EsperDoD\/status\/1312467863626629120?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 3, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>Strengthen strategic partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The military agreement \u201cserves as a road map for defense cooperation and aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries and support shared security goals,\u201d according to a statement issued by the Moroccan Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The road map charts cooperation between the two nations through 2030 and will allow the United States and Morocco to improve defense cooperation, partnerships and interoperability.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement centers on \u201cconsolidating common security objectives, especially improving the degree of military readiness,\u201d a statement from the General Command of the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces said.<\/p>\n<p>Esper also met\u00a0Abdeltif Loudiyi, charged with national defense,\u00a0 and the Inspector General of the Morocco Royal Armed Forces, Gen. Abdelfettah Louarak.<\/p>\n<p>The military deal would further bolster defense cooperation between the two countries.
