It is also meant to adopt extreme so-called &#8220;social distancing&#8221; to limit the potential spread of the virus should it make its way onto the base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Under normal circumstances, the watch teams, which support both NORTHCOM and\u00a0\u00a0North American Aerospace Defense Command (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.norad.mil\/About-NORAD\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #a80000;\">NORAD<\/span><\/a>) missions, would take shifts staffing a central command center at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is located at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, a short distance from NORAD and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcom.mil\/About-USNORTHCOM\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #a80000;\">USNORTHCOM<\/span><\/a> headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8216;To ensure that we can defend the homeland despite this pandemic, our command and control watch teams here in the headquarters split into multiple shifts and portions of our watch team began working from Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station,&#8217; Air Force General Terrence O&#8217;Shaughnessy, head of U.S. Northern Command and NORAD, said during a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/USNORTHCOM\/videos\/205565950728791\/?__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARD8KZ_pnSNQded7ZclPkNKUcpszDKyBxPGKh1v1Nafv1vOPorl5NYZj8YwnlZpj8mSHoABHxHRIH8NPcSnWeNSP8k-Gvrp7ucXgET26WpCv2bfkLIVAuWUaNzJ3LJgWDDqNZd5-idgsKMoLLqfg2yWYvVLzRR6U_G2fmTCcDlAHtj6GvygyfmaxCuQrwsM_phSjobI7BUG18XPVU_n6kQBsKQv3jSIm1vvCquJlKZVSCRX6O4T6GvqE2FydWMgL7aT9J-oFGwgrbYluwOhByAsPQ1I2Tt8gQXKcAlT2BU7M50IVPX086lmU_9lZUXcajUl7Nc83Y38lS75y3vg-YtUFnAblRydDZha5vEeSeSe68F1RPnPyObI&amp;__tn__=HH-R\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook Live<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Because of the very nature of the way that Cheyenne Mountain&#8217;s built, it&#8217;s EMP (electromagnetic pulse)\u00a0hardened,&#8221; said the outgoing commander of Northern Command.U.S. Navy Admiral William Gortney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Our dedicated professionals of the NORAD and NORTHCOM command and control watch have left their homes, said goodbye to their families, and are isolated from everyone to ensure they can stand the watch each and every day to defend our homeland,&#8221; General O\u2019Shaughnessy said during the virtual town hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;It&#8217;s certainly not optimal, but it is absolutely necessary and appropriate given the situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Cheyenne Mountain Complex<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Completed in the mid-1960s, during the height of the Cold War in the late 1950s, it was built to survive a nuclear attack. After the Soviet Union collapsed, it called off its \u201cnuclear watch\u201d in 1992<\/p>\n<p>The defensive bunker lies 2,000 feet (610 meters) under Cheyenne Mountain. The complex is a grid of six tunnels up to 40 feet wide and three stories high and shielded by 2,500 feet of granite.
