{"id":6259,"date":"2019-12-21T21:12:03","date_gmt":"2019-12-21T21:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=6259"},"modified":"2019-12-23T07:48:49","modified_gmt":"2019-12-23T07:48:49","slug":"lockheed-martin-gets-1-96-billion-contract-for-saudi-warships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/lockheed-martin-gets-1-96-billion-contract-for-saudi-warships\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed Martin gets $1.96 billion contract for Saudi warships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lockheed Martin wins $1.95 billion Saudi MMSC order<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lockheed Martin was awarded a US$1.96 billion to build four Multi Mission Surface Combatant ships (MMSC) for the Kingdom Saudi Arabia, according to a contract released on December 20, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The four Multi-Mission Surface Combatant ships are based on the Lockheed Freedom-variant of the U.S. Navy\u2019s Littoral Combat Ship class. The four Saudi ships will be built at Fincantieri Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MMSC is the first ship based on an LCS variant to be built for a foreign partner\u201d according to the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Navy<\/a><\/span> International Small Combatants Program Office (PMS 525) programme manager Todd Tompkins.<\/p>\n<p>The ships are being procured by Saudi Arabia under the U.S. Navy\u2019s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. &#8220;This sale contributes to the foreign policy and national security of the U.S. by helping to improve the security of a strategic regional partner&#8221; according to the official statement.<\/p>\n<p>The warships are part of the Saudi Naval Expansion Program II to upgrade the kingdom&#8217;s Eastern Fleet.<\/p>\n<p>The 4,000-tons frigate can field a crew of 100 to 130. It runs on a power plant of two Rolls Royce MT-30 gas turbines and two Colt-Pielstick diesel engines. The ship will field eight RGM-84 Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles (ASM), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sonar suites, and torpedoes, said the USNI News <span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2019\/12\/20\/lockheed-awarded-1-96b-construction-contract-for-four-saudi-frigates\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The new Saudi ships will be built around an eight-cell Mk-41 vertical launch system and a 4D air search radar, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>The deal also includes 532 Raytheon RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missiles (ESSM) which can be loaded four to a Mk 41 cell.
