Afghan government has released at least 490 Taliban prisoners to encourage Taliban to join peace talks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Afghan government says it has freed 490 Taliban prisoners from jails across the country in a gesture of goodwill to encourage Taliban fighters\u00a0to join the intra-Afghan peace talks.<\/p>\n

Officials say measures have been taken to ensure these prisoners would not pose a threat to the country’s security or rejoin the Taliban.<\/p>\n

The prisoners have been freed from Pul-e-Charkhi, the central prison, as well as prisons in Bagram, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Herat, Jawzjan, Kunar, Logar, Khost, Ghazni, and other cities.<\/p>\n

The release was made after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s announcement to\u00a0free almost 900 prisoners on the Muslim festival of Eid-al-Fitr holiday.\u00a0Efforts are underway to free more inmates.<\/p>\n

Taliban welcome the release of inmates by Afghan government<\/span><\/h3>\n

Taliban\u00a0have welcomed the Afghan government’s move to release hundreds of insurgents from different prisons.<\/p>\n

\u201cGranting the right of liberty back to the inmates is a good step, we hope all those countrymen are released as well those who were arrested or kept captive for years over wrong intelligence information, wrong reports or due to local rivalries\u201d, Zabihullah Mujahed, the Taliban spokesman said in a statement shared on the social media.<\/p>\n

National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib said the decision to release Taliban prisoners is in line with the demands of the people’s representatives at the Loya Jirga (a grand consultative meeting) for peace in April.<\/p>\n

Afghan government criticized for freeing Taliban prisoners<\/span><\/h3>\n

The move, however, has been sharply criticized by some political and military analysts.<\/p>\n

Rahmatullah Nabil, former head of the National Directorate of Security and a presidential candidate, said on Facebook\u00a0that the government does not have a clear definition of its friends and enemies which has taken the country towards a crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne comes and releases prisoners, but another promises to break the backbone of the Taliban in four months. One of them welcomes the killing of the Taliban, but another welcomes the Taliban prisoners\u2019 release. One of them calls the Taliban patriots, but another calls security forces the heroes of this country,\u201d Nabil wrote.<\/p>\n

Nazar Mohammad Mutmaeen, a political analyst, believes the move can be\u00a0productive in upcoming peace talks. \u201cI think that the release of these prisoners would not provide the condition for direct talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban but it will have a positive impact on talks between the US and the Taliban,\u201d Nazar\u00a0told TOLOnews<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
