{"id":5976,"date":"2019-04-21T09:35:07","date_gmt":"2019-04-21T09:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=5976"},"modified":"2019-04-22T07:35:05","modified_gmt":"2019-04-22T07:35:05","slug":"deadly-explosions-kill-at-least-290-in-sri-lanka-on-easter-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/deadly-explosions-kill-at-least-290-in-sri-lanka-on-easter-sunday\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly explosions kill at least 290 in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Simultaneous explosions in Sri Lanka kill nearly 300 people and leaves 500 wounded<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A series of explosions have rocked churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka, killing more than 290 people and injuring nearly 500 as worshippers attended Easter services.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lankan police have arrested 24\u00a0men in connection with the\u00a0blasts &#8211; the worst attacks in the South Asian island nation since the civil war ended in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The targets of the attack were St Anthony\u2019s Shrine, a church in Colombo, and St Sebastian\u2019s Church in Negombo were hit, as well as the Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand hotels in Colombo.<\/p>\n<p>The hotels targeted in the attack are all popular destinations for tourist. Photo courtesy: Eranga Jayawardena\/AP Photo<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Worst attack since civil war ended<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The coordinated attacks were termed as the worst form of violence in the South Asian country since the civil war ended a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Local Sri Lankans said the attacks were a blow to the country&#8217;s tourism sector. Ashwin Hemmathagama, a reporter with the Daily FT, told Al Jazeera, &#8220;After the civil war ended, almost a decade ago, the tourism industry was picking up.
