The U.K. has been very good because it wants to maintain cooperation with Europe beyond bilateral ties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>French President Macron\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/5-takeaways-from-macrons-big-speech-on-europes-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the planned force in a speech at the Sorbonne last September, and October\u2019s\u00a0<span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gouv.fr\/dgris\/politique-de-defense\/revue-strategique\/revue-strategique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strategic Review of Defense and National Security<\/a><\/span>\u00a0makes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gouv.fr\/content\/download\/514686\/8664672\/file\/2017-RS-PointsClesEN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plain<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0the European Intervention Initiative is high on France\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative has reportedly has taken NATO leaders by surprise. However,\u00a0Nato\u2019s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, who was in Luxembourg for discussions on European security and defence before a summit of the military alliance in Brussels next month, told reporters: \u201cI welcome this initiative as I believe it can strengthen the readiness of forces.
