Trump-Kim summit: Kim Jong Un gave unwavering commitment to denuclearisation, says Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

The U.S. and North Korea agreed to seek complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula following a historic summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, yet the accord set no deadline and left the path to disarmament undefined.<\/p>\n

Trump defended the two-page document<\/a><\/span> he signed with Kim at the end of their meeting in Singapore earlier Tuesday, saying that he thinks his North Korean counterpart will live up to it. \u201cIt\u2019s very comprehensive,\u201d the president said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The signing ceremony was held after a four-hour summit in Singapore aimed at easing decades of tensions between adversaries that only last year seemed on the brink of nuclear war.<\/p>\n

Trump hailed the summit as a \u201cvery important event in world history\u201d, claiming Kim has given his \u201cunwavering\u201d commitment to dismantle its \u201cvery substantial\u201d nuclear arsenal.<\/p>\n

Trump and North Korean\u00a0leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday signed\u00a0an agreement\u00a0<\/a>that “reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”<\/p>\n

During the signing ceremony, Kim said the agreement \u201cheralds a new start, leaving the past behind.\u201d He added: \u201cthe world will witness a major change now.\u201d He left the summit site before Trump\u2019s news conference and didn\u2019t address reporters on his own.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a news conference after the summit and the signing of a joint statement, Mr Trump said the United States will stop the annual war games with South Korea, which North Korea opposes.<\/p>\n

But sanctions on North Korea will remain till complete denuclearisation takes place, which he said could take a long time.<\/p>\n

The US and North Korea also agreed to recover the remains of prisoners of war from the conflict between North and South Korea, and the immediate repatriation of those already identified.<\/p>\n

China welcomed the summit as historic and said the international community could consider lifting sanctions.<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s prime minister, Shinzo Abe, said was willing to engage with North Korea to resolve the cold war abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korean spies.<\/p>\n
