{"id":5627,"date":"2018-04-27T20:39:35","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T20:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=5627"},"modified":"2018-04-27T20:42:10","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T20:42:10","slug":"north-korea-and-south-korea-agree-end-to-war-and-complete-denuclearization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/north-korea-and-south-korea-agree-end-to-war-and-complete-denuclearization\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea and South Korea agree end to war and &#8216;complete denuclearization&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>North Korea, South Korea agree to end war, denuclearize the Korean peninsula<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a historic summit on Friday, setting aside decades of hostility and paving the way for a peace deal first time since 1953.<\/p>\n<p>In a historic summit, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his North Korean counterpart, Kim Jong Un committed themselves to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and pledged to bring a formal end to the Korean War, 65 years after hostilities ceased.<\/p>\n<p>Shaking hands with Moon Jae-in, while standing in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) dividing the two countries, Kim told the South Korean President he felt the weight of meeting at &#8220;such a historic location.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a very courageous decision for you to come all the way here,&#8221; Moon replied.<\/p>\n<p>They signed the Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification on the Korean Peninsula, which commits the two countries to denuclearization and talks to bring a formal end to the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapping up the day, Kim made a toast and said: \u201cToday\u2019s meeting and accomplishment is just the beginning and nothing more than a tip of the iceberg compared to what we have to do ahead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLet\u2019s end the history of confrontations and mistrust between the North and the South, hold hands together and boldly move forward for the future of our people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In an exceptional day-long summit marked with symbolism, the two leaders embraced, planted tree and talked alone for more than 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Jong Un joked at a summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday that he would no longer interrupt Moon&#8217;s sleep with missile tests.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press\u00a0<span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AP\/status\/989712657694445568\">quoted a spokesman for South Korea&#8217;s government as saying<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Kim told Moon he wouldn&#8217;t &#8220;interrupt your early-morning sleep anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kim was presented with flowers by two South Korean fith-grade students and posed for photos with them and the South Korean leader.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders also inspected a traditional\u00a0Korean\u00a0guard of honor before greeting ministers and military officers of both countries and making their way to\u00a0Peace House,\u00a0the\u00a0summit venue.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Secretary General applauded the historic Korea summit and noted that many around the world are \u201cmoved by the powerful imagery,&#8221;
