{"id":5554,"date":"2018-03-09T18:42:55","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T18:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=5554"},"modified":"2018-03-09T18:50:18","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T18:50:18","slug":"qatar-signs-defense-deals-with-nato-and-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/qatar-signs-defense-deals-with-nato-and-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Qatar signs defense deals with NATO and US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Qatar signs Security Cooperation agreement with NATO and $197 million weapons deal with US<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Qatar has signed defense deals with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and US to enhance military and security cooperation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The deal with NATO was signed on 7 March 2018 at NATO Headquarters in Brussel where NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg held a meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The two leaders discussed the security situation in the Gulf region and the partnership between NATO and Qatar, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;This will facilitate NATO missions and operations in the region, including the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan,&#8221; the <span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/news_152658.htm\" target=\"_blank\">NATO statement said<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The deal came as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg received Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani at NATO headquarters s and<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Qatar is one of four countries \u2013 along with Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates \u2013 participating in NATO\u2019s Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI). Launched in 2004, ICI seeks to promote political consultation and practical cooperation between NATO and countries in the Gulf region.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">US signs $197m weapons deal with Qatar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In another related development, the United States approved the potential sale of air defence systems worth $197 million to Qatar yesterday, a statement by the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dsca.mil\/major-arms-sales\/qatar-upgrade-qatar-air-operations-center-aoc\" target=\"_blank\">Defence Security Cooperation Agency<\/a><\/span>\u00a0confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress\u201d in the Gulf region, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe upgrade of the [Air Operations Centre] AOC will support the defensive capability of Qatar.\u00a0The proposed sale will help strengthen Qatar\u2019s capability to counter current and future threats in the region and reduce dependence on US forces.\u00a0Qatar will have no difficulty absorbing the required equipment and capability into its armed forces,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The proposed sale &#8220;will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States&#8221;
