{"id":5417,"date":"2017-11-01T17:32:58","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T17:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=5417"},"modified":"2017-11-01T18:18:53","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T18:18:53","slug":"nuclear-energy-required-to-meet-global-climate-change-goals-iaea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/nuclear-energy-required-to-meet-global-climate-change-goals-iaea\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear energy required to meet global Climate Change goals: IAEA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Lack of Nuclear Power investments hinders Climate Goal achievement: IAEA conference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nuclear power has the advantage to strengthen energy security and mitigate the effects of climate change, air pollution and is needed for the world to meet its climate goals, according to the <span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/pressreleases\/iaea-conference-says-more-nuclear-power-needed-to-meet-global-goals-on-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">IAEA international conference<\/a><\/span> that concluded in the United Arab Emirates on Nov. 1, 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some 700 participants from 67 <span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/about\/governance\/list-of-member-states\" target=\"_blank\">IAEA Member States<\/a><\/span> and five international organizations attended the event in Abu Dhabi, UAE.\u00a0The participants recognized the IAEA\u2019s leading role in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy and supporting efforts to strengthen global nuclear safety, nuclear security and safeguards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Conference recognized that nuclear power remains an important option for many countries to improve energy security, reduce the impact of volatile fossil fuel prices and mitigate the effects of climate change and air pollution, including by backing up\u00a0 intermittent energy sources,\u201d Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, president of the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alkaabi, the UAE\u2019s Permanent Representative to the IAEA in Vienna, spoke at the conference\u2019s closing session, attended by IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The three-day conference provided a forum for high-level discussion on the role of nuclear power in the coming decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nuclear power emits virtually no greenhouse gases during operation. It produces 11 percent of the world\u2019s electricity, which amounts to one-third of all electricity generated from low-carbon sources. Participants noted that some 6.5 million deaths a year are linked to air pollution, with that number set to increase significantly in the coming decades in the absence of greater action to curb emissions and expand access to low-carbon energy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To meet targets set out in the Paris Agreement on climate change, \u201csubstantial growth in nuclear electricity generation by 2050 will be required,\u201d Alkaabi said, citing the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While nuclear power will play a key role for many countries in achieving the Sustainable Development goals and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, \u201cnuclear is not currently attracting the necessary global investment\u201d to limit the average global temperature increase to 2\u00b0 C as required by the Paris Agreement, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn addition, a number of plants are being shut down in some countries before the end of their safe operational lifetimes for both political and economic reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Organized in cooperation with the <span style=\"color: #a80000;\"><a style=\"color: #a80000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-nea.org\" target=\"_blank\">Nuclear Energy Agency<\/a><\/span> (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the conference was the fourth such ministerial event following previous gatherings in Paris in 2005, Beijing in 2009 and St. Petersburg in 2013.
