{"id":5116,"date":"2017-06-03T16:23:40","date_gmt":"2017-06-03T16:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=5116"},"modified":"2017-06-03T09:37:25","modified_gmt":"2017-06-03T09:37:25","slug":"swedens-entry-to-nato-would-be-threat-to-russia-putin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/swedens-entry-to-nato-would-be-threat-to-russia-putin\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweden&#8217;s entry to NATO would be &#8216;threat to Russia&#8217;: Putin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Swedish membership in the NATO defense alliance is seen as a threat to Russia and would worsen bilateral relations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed extreme opposition to the idea of Sweden joining NATO, calling its potential membership of the U.S.-led alliance a \u201cthreat\u201d that would need to be \u201celiminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf Sweden joins NATO this will affect our relations in a negative way because we will consider that the infrastructure of the military bloc now approaches us from the Swedish side,\u201d Putin told state news agency <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/949067\" target=\"_blank\">Itar-Tass<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe will interpret that as an additional threat for Russia and we will think about how to eliminate this threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, Putin also added that the Russian concern &#8220;does not mean that we will be swept up in hysteria and point our nuclear missiles at Sweden.&#8221; But it will be considered as &#8220;an additional threat,&#8221; he reiterated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time, the Russian president stated that Moscow &#8220;has no plans to threaten Sweden.&#8221; Putin cited the western media\u2019s &#8220;fake news saying that a Russian submarine or an aircraft was spotted somewhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;It seems to me that only a madman can imagine that Russia plans to attack Sweden,&#8221; Putin noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his opinion, &#8220;as far as enhancing Sweden\u2019s military capabilities is concerned, this [NATO membership]\u00a0will not be of any help.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Putin pointed out that the decision on joining NATO &#8220;can only be made by the Swedish authorities elected by the people to lead the country&#8221; and NATO members cannot make decisions regarding the deployment of military infrastructure in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Russian officials have repeatedly treated NATO expansion near or at its borders as encroachment, rather than a desire by their smaller neighbors to deter Russian military incursion as sustained by Ukraine in 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, only Montenegro is on the list of countries to be inducted into NATO, as Sweden and neighbor Finland opt to stay non-aligned.
