Macron and Putin discuss Syria, Ukraine in first meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n

French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to improve relations and jointly address international problems during their \u201cdifficult\u201d but \u201cfrank\u201d talks.<\/p>\n

The first meeting between the two leaders was held at the Palace of Versailles,\u00a0currently the host of an exhibition commemorating the 300th anniversary of Peter the Great\u2019s diplomatic visit to Paris and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n

Macron said he wanted to work with Russia over the conflict in Syria in the struggle against terrorism.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Putin said he wanted to strengthen economic ties with France after the restrictions of recent years.<\/p>\n

After a two-hour meeting with the Russian president, the French president said he wanted to strengthen cooperation with Russia in seeking a solution to the Syria conflict. He said this involved talking to all parties in a \u201cdiplomatic and political framework\u201d.<\/p>\n

But Macron said France would show \u201cno weakness\u201d if chemical weapons were used, and would immediately respond.<\/p>\n

Putin also said that the two leaders have some differences, but\u00a0the French-Russian relations could be \u201cqualitatively\u201d improved.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sought \u2026 common ground [in dealing] with key issues of the international agenda. And I believe that we see it. We are able to \u2026 at least try to start resolving the key contemporary problems together,\u201d Putin said.<\/p>\n

French President Macron said that serious international problems cannot be resolved without Moscow.<\/p>\n

The two leaders Macron and\u00a0his Russian counterpart also agreed\u00a0on the need to restart dialogue on the situation with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe spoke at length about the details of the situation\u201d in Ukraine, said Macron after the talks, adding that both parties wanted \u201cin the shortest timeframe a dialogue in the Normandy format, and that a full account of the situation can be shared.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0The French president also said he wanted France and Russia to cooperate in Syria in order to destroy terrorism and restore peace, calling for an \u201cinclusive political solution that goes beyond eradicating terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Macron who seemed to have dominated the press conference later said: \u201cIt was an exchange that was extremely frank, direct, with a lot of things that were said\u201d.<\/p>\n
