{"id":5037,"date":"2017-05-13T17:55:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-13T17:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=5037"},"modified":"2017-05-13T17:55:00","modified_gmt":"2017-05-13T17:55:00","slug":"north-korea-open-to-talks-with-us-under-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/north-korea-open-to-talks-with-us-under-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea open to talks with US under &#8216;conditions&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>North Korea &#8216;would hold talks&#8217; with Trump administration if certain conditions are met<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">North Korea is willing to engage in talks with the U.S. under the right conditions, a senior North Korean diplomat who handles relations with the United States said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Choe Son Hui, North Korea&#8217;s foreign ministry director general for U.S. affairs, made the comment to reporters in Beijing as she was traveling home from Norway, Yonhap said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We&#8217;ll have dialogue if the conditions are there,&#8221; she told reporters when asked if the North was preparing to hold talks with the Trump administration, <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/english.yonhapnews.co.kr\/northkorea\/2017\/05\/13\/0401000000AEN20170513002600315.html\" target=\"_blank\">according to Yonhap<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Choe had just concluded Track 1.5 discussions with former U.S. officials and scholars in Norway and was in the process of returning to Pyongyang at the time of the interview.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Choi did not elaborate the North&#8217;s conditions are, but her comments raise the possibility of North Korea and the U.S. returning to negotiations for the first time since 2008.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe remark is definitely a bit softer in tone compared to the past when the North would\u2019ve said no to talks unless the U.S. acknowledges them as a nuclear power\u201d according to\u00a0Shin Beomchul, a professor at Korea National Diplomatic Academy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The North Korean comments follow remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump\u00a0that he would be \u201chonored\u201d to meet North Korean leader\u00a0Kim Jong Un under the right conditions. Trump has also pledged to consider all options to rein\u00a0in Kim\u2019s nuclear-arms ambitions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tensions have scaled in recent months after the Trump administration said it would keep &#8220;<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"Military action against North Korea is \u2018an option\u2019, says Rex Tillerson\" href=\"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/military-action-against-north-korea-is-an-option-says-rex-tillerson\/\" target=\"_blank\">all options on the table<\/a><\/span>&#8221; to halt North Korea&#8217;s nuclear weapons program, including a military strike.
