{"id":5009,"date":"2017-04-21T17:54:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T17:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=5009"},"modified":"2017-04-21T17:58:01","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T17:58:01","slug":"us-and-germany-conduct-joint-air-support-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/us-and-germany-conduct-joint-air-support-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"US and Germany conduct joint Air Support Exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The U.S. and German air forces have concluded a close air support exercise at Camp Grayling, Michigan, to strengthen their forces fight against terrorism,\u00a0US Department of Defense (DoD) <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Article\/Article\/1156521\/us-germany-conduct-close-air-support-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Members of the German Air Force\u2019s Air Ground Operations Squadron (AGOS) and the US Air Force&#8217;s (USAF) 19th Air Support Operations Squadron took part in the four-day-long exercise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The joint air exercise was aimed at enhancing coordination between Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTAC) of NATO Allies&#8217; air forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNATO is fighting together as a coalition,\u201d said German Air Force Maj. Nader Samadi, the AGOS commander. \u201cWe do everything together, whether it\u2019s U.S. or other NATO partners, the standards are the same. We try to work the same ways so we\u2019re interoperable, and that\u2019s the best thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This training is relevant because nearly every operation the U.S. engages in, such as <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a id=\"anch_194\" style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inherentresolve.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Operation Inherent Resolve<\/a><\/span>, is a joint effort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Air Force Master Sgt. Thomas Jenn, the 19th Air Support Operations Squadron division flight chief maintained that the conflict in the Middle East demand all global powers to unite in fight against terrorism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith everything happening in the Middle East and across the globe, like [the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria] trying to fight their way into the European area, it provides a legitimate reason as to why we should all get together and become as strong as we can through joint training,\u201d said Air Force Master Sgt. Thomas Jenn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">German Air Force AGOS commander major Nader Samadi noted that air-to-air dogfights between aircraft are far less common than air-to-ground strikes or ground-to-ground skirmishes. This makes Tactical Air Control Parties consisting of Joint Terminal Attack Controllers a crucial piece of the battle puzzle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNobody really knows what the JTAC is doing but everybody wants to have them,\u201d Samadi said. \u201cIt\u2019s really important because we don\u2019t want civilian casualties. So NATO forces send us JTACs on-site to find out the best way to conduct \u2026 surgical strikes where we have civilian collateral damage concerns. It\u2019s really important that somebody is there to liaise between the boots on the ground and the air guys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With bigger weapons come greater stakes. While the JTACs are attached to ground units, they must be precise with their directions and clear on the radio to effectively put bombs on target.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe TACP and JTAC capability is a lot like a language translator,\u201d Jenn said. \u201cTwo very distinctive branches from the same country speak, think and act differently, so we are that in-between.
