{"id":4145,"date":"2016-06-18T20:09:29","date_gmt":"2016-06-18T20:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=4145"},"modified":"2016-06-18T20:09:29","modified_gmt":"2016-06-18T20:09:29","slug":"norway-aims-biggest-military-upgrade-since-cold-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/norway-aims-biggest-military-upgrade-since-cold-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway aims biggest military upgrade since Cold War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Norway announces plans for the\u00a0biggest military upgrade since the end of the Cold War, to bolster its\u00a0defense\u00a0against Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1pr6elu78ha.$tgtm-Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$0\">Norway <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocal.no\/20160618\/norway-boosts-defences-against-unpredictable-russia\" target=\"_blank\">announced plans<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for its biggest military upgrade since the end of the Cold War, to bolster its defences against an &#8220;increasingly unpredictable&#8221; Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1pr6elu78ha.$tgtm-Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$0\">The Scandinavian country, a NATO member, plans new fighter jets and submarines to boost its ability to protect itself from its vast neighbour, with which it shares an Arctic border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1pr6elu78ha.$tgtm-Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$0\">Over 20 years, Norway will boost its defence budget by 165 billion kroner (17.5 billion euros), according to details of a military programming law presented by the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1pr6elu78ha.$tgtm-Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$0\">But it is less than the 180 billion kroner sought last year by the armed forces chief Haakon Bruun-Hanssen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1pr6elu78ha.$tgtm-Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$0\">&#8220;Unfortunately, the geopolitical circumstances have changed significantly, in a bad way, in recent years,&#8221; Prime Minister Erna Solberg told a press conference in Oslo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We have an increasingly unpredictable neighbour to the east which is strengthening its military capacity, and showing willingness to use military force as a political tool,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway&#8217;s military modernization effort\u00a0aims to upgrade the army by maintaining existing resources and buying new equipment. The plan includes the purchase of 52 <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.f35.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\">F-35 fighter jets<\/a><\/span> and four submarines, as well as new naval surveillance planes to replace six ageing P-3 Orion aircraft.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Solberg said the country&#8217;s current military might &#8220;is not adapted to the geopolitical situation,&#8221; describing a &#8220;historic defence effort, the biggest since the end of the Cold War.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before the military plans can be implemented the rightwing government has to get its proposals adopted in parliament where it is in a minority, and\u00a0could therefore have to make amendments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway&#8217;s military upgrade news comes after NATO announced the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/06\/13\/politics\/nato-battalions-poland-baltics-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\">deployment of four multinational battalions<\/a><\/span> to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland as tensions with Russia remain high. &#8220;This will send a clear signal that NATO stands ready to defend any ally,&#8221; NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Finland &#8211; Russia tensions increase<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finland &#8211; the country which shares the European Union&#8217;s longest border with Russia &#8211; has gradually stepped up its cooperation with NATO after Russia seized and annexed Crimea in 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finland, which is not a member of NATO, was taking the &#8220;security challenges&#8221; seriously and is closely cooperating with NATO, and deepening cooperation with Sweden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finland&#8217;s Foreign Minister Timo Soini recently said Russia&#8217;s actions constituted an &#8220;essential change&#8221; for Europe&#8217;s security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During Finnish\u00a0Foreign Minister&#8217;s to Moscow in early June 2016,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made it clear that Russia has a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mid.ru\/en\/press_service\/minister_speeches\/-\/asset_publisher\/7OvQR5KJWVmR\/content\/id\/2303332\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u00a0negative attitude<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to what he called, &#8220;the movement of NATO&#8217;s military infrastructure closer to our border and involving other states in its military activities,&#8221;
