{"id":3981,"date":"2016-05-14T15:12:35","date_gmt":"2016-05-14T15:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=3981"},"modified":"2016-05-22T07:33:15","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T07:33:15","slug":"us-and-nordic-nations-to-cooperate-on-security-refugee-crisis-fight-against-isis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/us-and-nordic-nations-to-cooperate-on-security-refugee-crisis-fight-against-isis\/","title":{"rendered":"US and Nordic nations to cooperate on security, refugee crisis, fight against ISIS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Obama praises Nordic friendship, pledges collaboration on terrorism, climate change, defense, trade<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">WASHINGTON (US) &#8211;\u00a0Leaders of the U.S. and Nordic nations have <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2016\/05\/13\/us-nordic-leaders-summit-joint-statement\" target=\"_blank\">pledged collaboration<\/a><\/span> on key global issues related to security and defense; migration and refugees; climate change, clean energy and the Arctic and economic growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Building on the U.S.-Nordic meeting in 2013 in Stockholm, the leaders <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2016\/05\/13\/us-nordic-leaders-summit-joint-statement\" target=\"_blank\">agreed to enhance cooperation<\/a><\/span> in Washington Summit 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Barack Obama welcomed leaders from five Nordic nations, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark, to the White House to discuss issues ranging from Russian aggression to the European migrant crisis to fighting ISIS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe United States and the Nordic countries are committed to partnering together to strengthen international security and address global issues beyond Europe\u201d the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2016\/05\/13\/us-nordic-leaders-summit-joint-statement\" target=\"_blank\">joint agreement<\/a><\/span> stated.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Russia, Terrorism, Trade and Climate \u2013 key areas of discussion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The discussions at the Nordic USA Summit 2016 covered varied global issues \u2014 including combating terrorism, fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS or Da\u2019esh), facilitating international trade, protecting the environment, Russian aggression and managing refugee flows.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Finnish president applauded the cooperation between the two nations, stating that their ideologies are very similar &#8212; particularly when it comes to climate change.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">US and Nordic leaders recognize Russia\u2019s role to counter ISIS but concerned by its growing military presence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the meeting, leaders of United States and Nordic countries highlighted their concern about\u00a0\u201cRussia\u2019s growing military presence in the Baltic Sea region,\u00a0its\u00a0nuclear posturing, its undeclared exercises, and the provocative actions taken by Russian aircraft and naval vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The leaders called upon Russia to ensure that its military maneuvers and exercises are in full compliance with its international obligations. Obama has long expressed admiration for the pragmatic and liberal-leaning politics of the Nordic nations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Around the world\u00a0Americas\u00a0closest partners are democracies. We only need to look at our Nordic friends to see\u00a0why,&#8221; Obama said. &#8220;We share the same interests and we share the same values.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Nordic countries and USA pledge more support to fight terrorism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Terrorism and violent extremism are major challenges for the international community, leaders agreed at the summit 2016, asserting that United States and the Nordic countries intend to work together to counter ISIS and enhance civilian support, and humanitarian aid in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the U.S.-Nordic Leaders\u2019 Summit Joint Statement, this is how the Nordic nations will help fight extremism and stabilize the conflict region:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Denmark will redeploy F16 fighter jets, a C130J transport aircraft, and will support stabilization efforts in Iraq and Syria with at least $40 million over the next three years, and has pledged $47 million in 2016 for humanitarian relief in Syria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finland will increase its contribution to Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq by providing up to 100 training staff in 2016. \u00a0Finland is committing $29 million for humanitarian relief in Syria in 2016. Finnish humanitarian assistance has amounted to more than $120 million since the beginning of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/norway-to-train-local-syrian-groups-in-jordan-to-fight-isis\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Norwegian special forces soldiers to train local Syrian groups to fight ISIS<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway has stepped up its military contribution to the coalition against ISIS, and will continue to train Iraqi soldiers by deploying a contingent of <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/norway-to-train-local-syrian-groups-in-jordan-to-fight-isis\/\" target=\"_blank\">60 soldiers who will provide training<\/a><\/span>, advice and operational support to Syrian local forces to fight Da\u2019esh. Norway has recently pledged $1.2 billion over 4 years in humanitarian aid to Syria and has pledged $24 million to stabilization efforts, including $3.1 million in 2016 for demining in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sweden is contributing military trainers in Iraq.
