{"id":3917,"date":"2016-05-02T19:47:53","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T19:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=3917"},"modified":"2016-05-02T20:01:18","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T20:01:18","slug":"norway-to-train-local-syrian-groups-in-jordan-to-fight-isis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/norway-to-train-local-syrian-groups-in-jordan-to-fight-isis\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway to train local Syrian groups in Jordan to fight ISIS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Norwegian special forces soldiers to train\u00a0local Syrian groups to support coalition fighting ISIS in Syria and Iraq<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway will send 60 troops, including special forces soldiers, to train, advise and give operational support to\u00a0local Syrian groups as part of international efforts to counter Islamic State militants, the government said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norwegian troops will be based in\u00a0Jordan.\u00a0The soldiers belonging to the Norwegian special forces would conduct the training in Jordan, Prime Minister Erna Solberg <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/norwaypost.no\/index.php\/news\/latest-news\/31084\" target=\"_blank\">said at a press conference<\/a><\/span> in Oslo. \u201cThe brutal acts by the Islamic State have cost many civilians their lives and led an even greater number to flee (the country),\u201d Solberg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1hazo23ri80.$Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$2\">&#8220;The brutal acts by IS have cost many civilians their lives and led an even greater number to flee (the country),&#8221; Solberg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1hazo23ri80.$Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$3\">The IS group has also &#8220;brought terrorism to Europe and young people are radicalised and recruited in order to have foreign fighters,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1hazo23ri80.$Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$3\">The Syrian groups that will be trained by the Norwegian soldiers were not identified, but according to Defence Minister Ine Eriksen SoreidIne Eriksen, they were chosen following a \u201cthorough and systematic\u201d selection process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm canvas-atom\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-type=\"text\" data-reactid=\".1hazo23ri80.$Col1-0-ContentCanvas.0.4.0:$3\">Norway&#8217;s Defence Minister Ine Erikesen Soreide said the new contribution was in line with a request from the international coalition and Norway\u2018s allies including the United States, Britain and France.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018The coalition has asked for this type of assistance, and our contribution is greatly valued. The fighting itself will be done by others, but we can help by enhancing their combat capabilities,\u2019 said Minister of Defence Ine Eriksen S\u00f8reide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway&#8217;s decision comes a week after the United States announced its biggest expansion of US ground troops in Syria since its civil war began.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than 65 countries and organisations have joined the international coalition against ISIS, including Western countries and countries in the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway is already involved in the anti-ISIS coalition, in particular by training Kurdish peshmerga fighters in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway has previously sent troops to train Iraqi ground forces in northern Iraq.\u00a0&#8220;Although IS has access to heavy military equipment, the fight against them has had an effect,&#8221; Eriksen Soreide told reporters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway has also stepped up its civilian efforts in the region.\u00a0\u2018In 2016 Norway will provide a total of NOK 200 million (25 million dollars)\u00a0for stabilisation measures in Iraq and Syria.. to assist the civilian population.. and to prevent other extremist groups from gaining a foothold,\u2019 says Foreign Minister B\u00f8rge Brende.\u00a0Norway also intends to spend up to NOK 50 million to map and clear landmines in formerly ISIS-held areas in Syria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Norway will also <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.regjeringen.no\/en\/aktuelt\/suportsyrians\/id2473684\/\" target=\"_blank\">provide NOK 10 billion to Syria<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and the region over the next four years.
