The missile is expected to improve the operational flexibility of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) by providing another weapon option for engaging hostile aircraft at longer distances.

The Fa’az is equipped with an advanced terminal guidance system designed to track and engage aerial targets during the final stage of flight. The missile uses an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, which allows it to detect and track targets through their infrared signatures without relying on active radar guidance.

Footage released by the ISPR showed the missile being launched from a JF-17 fighter, although the military’s statement did not specifically identify the launch platform. The Fa’az missile family is projected to have a range exceeding 100 kilometers, potentially giving Pakistani fighter aircraft an additional long-range engagement capability.

The Fa’az program reportedly includes different variants designed to provide the PAF with multiple targeting options. These include the Fa’az-IIR, which uses an imaging infrared seeker, and the Fa’az-RF, an active radar-guided version. A longer-range missile, designated Fa’az-2, is also reportedly under development.

PAKISTAN SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTS FLIGHT TEST OF FIRST INDIGENOUSLY DEVELOPED FA’AZ AIR- TO-AIR MISSILE Pakistan has conducted successful flight test of first indigenously developed Fa’az air- to-air missile, marking another significant milestone in the advancement of national aerospace and defense capabilities. Equipped with state of the art terminal guidance system, it can engage enemy aerial targets at longer ranges. Fa’az will significantly enhance operational flexibility of Pakistan Air Force, further strengthening the country’s overall defense posture. The successful flight test underscores the technical maturity, innovation and self reliance achieved by Pakistan’s defense industry. The launch was witnessed by senior officers of the Pakistan Armed Forces, along with distinguished scientists and engineers who played a pivotal role in the development of this advanced weapon system. The President, Prime Minister of Pakistan, COAS & CDF and Services Chiefs have congratulated the scientists and engineers on this remarkable achievement.
— DGPR (AIR FORCE) (@DGPR_PAF) November 3, 2026

The program falls under the National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM). Mock-ups of the Fa’az-IIR and Fa’az-RF were first displayed publicly at the 2023 International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul, Turkiye, offering an early indication of Pakistan’s plans to develop a family of domestically produced air-to-air weapons.

Reducing Dependence on Foreign Suppliers

The successful test is particularly significant because the Pakistan Air Force currently relies heavily on foreign suppliers for its air-to-air missile inventory. Its existing weapons include the American AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) and China’s PL-15 and other PL-series missiles.

Although these weapons provide the PAF with advanced air combat capabilities, dependence on foreign suppliers can create challenges involving procurement, maintenance, upgrades, and long-term availability. Developing an indigenous alternative could gradually reduce these constraints and give Pakistan greater control over the weapons integrated into its fighter fleet.

Domestic production could also make it easier to maintain and upgrade missile systems without depending entirely on external suppliers or obtaining additional export approvals for every modification. Over time, the development of different Fa’az variants could provide the PAF with greater flexibility in selecting weapons for different operational requirements.

The missile’s development also reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to expand its domestic defense production capabilities, particularly in aerospace and precision-guided weapons. Establishing the ability to design, test, and manufacture advanced air-to-air missiles would represent an important addition to the country’s existing defense industrial base.

Wider Push in Indigenous Missile Development

The Fa’az flight test follows several recent developments in Pakistan’s domestic missile programs, including the successful test launch of the extended-range Fatah-2 ballistic missile on October 13, 2026.

According to the ISPR, the Fatah-2 Extended Range (ER) is equipped with advanced navigation systems and avionics, allowing it to engage targets with high precision.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1016" height="719" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ir-ia.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/Pakistan-Air-Force-Faaz-missile.jpg?resize=1016%2C719&ssl=1" alt="Pakistan Air Force testing indigenously developed Fa’az air-to-air missile.
