Russian President Vladimir Putin held separate meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Moscow on October 27, 2026, to discuss regional tensions, diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict involving Iran, and bilateral economic cooperation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meetings took place on the sidelines of the 8th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit, as Moscow called for de-escalation and renewed negotiations. Putin expressed concern over the situation in the Middle East, citing Russia\u2019s close ties with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Moscow hoped tensions would ease and regional developments would move in a positive direction. Pezeshkian, meanwhile, called for stronger regional cooperation and argued that countries in the Middle East could resolve their disputes without relying on the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his meeting with Pezeshkian, Putin described the GECF summit as successful and said discussions between participating leaders had been useful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian president emphasized the close relationship between Moscow and Tehran, noting that the two countries share common interests and are working to advance them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin said Russia was meeting its commitments under joint projects with Iran. Russian-Iranian trade increased by 10.4% during the first eight months of 2026, while construction of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant continued.<\/p>\n\n\n

Pezeshkian thanked Putin for Russia\u2019s political and economic support, describing their discussions as productive. He also welcomed the growth in trade between the two countries and called for further cooperation across several sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iranian president said U.S. actions in the region had demonstrated the need to work toward a multipolar world, arguing that regional countries could address their challenges through cooperation without relying on Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are capable of resolving all our issues, all regional matters, without the United States,\u201d Pezeshkian said, adding that regional countries did not need to rely on American assistance to address their disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said countries in the region could expand cooperation in scientific, economic, industrial, cultural, security, and military fields. He also argued that closer coordination among regional states could help address shared challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier at the GECF summit, Pezeshkian criticized unilateral U.S. sanctions and military interventions, describing them as major threats to the stability of global energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Putin Calls for Diplomatic Solution to Iran Crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate meeting with Qatar\u2019s emir, Putin emphasized the importance of ending hostilities and pursuing a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict involving Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian President Putin said the Islamabad Memorandum, signed in June with mediation from Qatar and Pakistan, remained a relevant basis for advancing negotiations. The framework was intended to support efforts to reach an agreement between Iran and the United States and end the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cFor our part, we are prepared to do everything within our power to help resolve this complex and acute problem,\u201d Putin said, reaffirming Russia\u2019s readiness to support diplomatic efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin also welcomed Qatar\u2019s mediation in regional crises and highlighted the importance of continued coordination between Moscow and Doha. He said Russia had called for an end to hostilities and a diplomatic settlement since the outbreak of the war involving Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al Thani said tensions between Washington and Tehran had affected the wider region, including the Strait of Hormuz and energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Qatari emir also welcomed Russia\u2019s efforts to support a resolution and called for continued work to address regional crises, including the Palestinian issue and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Russia and Qatar Expand Economic Cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin also discussed economic ties with Al Thani, highlighting cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector. As major natural gas producers and exporters, Russia and Qatar play an important role in global energy markets, he said, adding that coordination between them could contribute to market stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin reported that bilateral trade had increased by approximately 10% and identified investment, tourism, and cultural exchanges as additional areas of cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meetings underscored Moscow\u2019s efforts to maintain close relations with Tehran and Doha while supporting diplomatic initiatives to reduce tensions in the Middle East. They also highlighted the role of energy and trade cooperation in Russia\u2019s bilateral relations with Iran and Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n
