The United States has withdrawn all B-1 bombers deployed at RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom and returned them to their home stations in the U.S. amid heightened security concerns surrounding the base.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The withdrawal comes days after British authorities arrested six people in connection with an alleged plot involving RAF Fairford, amid separate U.S. concerns over security threats to American forces at the base. The facility has been used by U.S. B-1 bombers during military operations against Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A U.S. official confirmed that all bombers deployed to Fairford had returned to their home stations but did not provide details about the threat that prompted the withdrawal. Another official described the incident as a \u201creal-world\u201d security threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rapid removal of all the aircraft from an allied base was unusual, particularly because the bombers were returned to the U.S. rather than being moved to another location in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved were B-1 bombers that had been operating from RAF Fairford. According to U.S. officials cited by U.S. media, 12 B-1 bombers were at the base and were moved after commanders received new threat information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the aircraft had arrived at Fairford only recently as part of a normal rotation. However, officials said new information linked to earlier warnings increased the urgency of the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some bombers and their crews reportedly left quickly, with aerial refueling aircraft being prepared to support their flights back to the U.S. At least three aircraft had reached Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota by Sunday, according to reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Department of War said bomber forces routinely operate around the world as part of global readiness and operational requirements. It confirmed that all bombers deployed to Fairford had redeployed to their home stations in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department said U.S. bomber crews, including those operating B-1, B-2, and B-52 aircraft, remain ready to conduct precision global strike missions from the continental U.S. when required.<\/p>\n\n\n

Caution over Potential Iran Threat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Vice President JD Vance said the decision was made \u201cout of an abundance of caution,\u201d indicating that the move was connected to concerns about a potential threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe feel with some confidence that the Iranians are, you know, they\u2019re trying to do what the Iranian state has done for 49 years, which is engage in acts of terrorism against the United States and against a lot of other people as well,\u201d Vance told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not provide specific details about the intelligence behind the decision. The withdrawal has drawn attention because RAF Fairford is an important operating location for U.S. Global Strike Command and has been used by American long-range bombers involved in recent operations in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security analysts said moving all of the bombers was unusual and indicated that U.S. commanders considered the threat serious enough to remove the aircraft from the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Rubio Plays Down Direct Connection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, however, cautioned against directly linking the bomber withdrawal to the arrests near Fairford. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t just directly tie that to the move that was made,\u201d Rubio told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said U.S. military forces are regularly moved around the world for exercises, rotations and operational requirements. \u201cThe Department of War is constantly reallocating resources where they need to be,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rubio also said the U.S. remained confident in the security of its bases and praised cooperation with British authorities over the investigation. His comments contrasted with Vance’s suggestion that the move was made as a precaution in response to a potential Iranian threat.<\/p>\n\n\n

British Authorities Investigate Terrorism Plot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bomber withdrawal comes as British authorities continue investigation into suspected terrorist activity near RAF Fairford. British police arrested five men on September 27 on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses after three suspicious vans were found near the base. The suspects were British nationals in their 20s from the London area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police later confirmed that no explosive devices were found in the vans, although a quantity of petrol was reportedly discovered. The five men were released on bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sixth suspect, a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national, was arrested separately on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under the Terrorism Act 2006. He was also later released on bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British counterterrorism officials have described the investigation as highly complex and said they were examining multiple lines of inquiry, including possible involvement by a foreign state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Britain Says Fairford Remains Secure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were \u201cstrong indications\u201d that Iran had played a role in the incident. \u201cWe will say more in due course, but we can confirm our belief that we believe Iran has played a part,\u201d Burnham said on September 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran has denied any involvement, describing the accusations as baseless. Iranian authorities also summoned the British ambassador in Tehran over the allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi reportedly called on Britain to reconsider what Tehran described as an inappropriate approach toward Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British government has meanwhile sought to reassure people living near RAF Fairford that the base remains secure. A Downing Street spokesperson said the government would not comment on foreign military operations but said Britain had established measures to protect its military bases in the UK and overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n

Asked directly whether RAF Fairford was safe, the spokesperson said: \u201cYes.\u201d The UK Ministry of Defense also declined to comment on U.S. military operations or capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RAF Fairford has become an important location for U.S. bomber operations in Europe. The base has hosted American B-1 bombers and serves as an operating location for U.S. Global Strike Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The base has supported recent U.S. military operations against Iran after Britain permitted Washington to use RAF Fairford for specific defensive operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision to return the bombers to the U.S. does not remove the U.S. bomber force’s ability to conduct long-range missions. B-1, B-2, and B-52 aircraft can launch from American bases and operate over long distances with aerial refueling support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
