U.S. troops returned in 2014 after the Islamic State seized large areas of Iraq and Syria.

The Islamic State has since lost its territorial control in Iraq, but the group continues to maintain sleeper cells. He added that the U.S. Department of War will continue to provide targeted training and intelligence support to Iraqi partners.

The final withdrawal follows an agreement reached in 2024 between Washington and Baghdad to end the coalition’s military mission. Most U.S. forces had already left bases in other parts of Iraq, while several hundred remained in the Kurdish region.

The remaining forces were largely focused on advisory and support activities after the Islamic State lost its territorial stronghold in Iraq in 2017.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="850" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ir-ia.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/US-Army-soldiers-in-Iraq.jpg?resize=1000%2C850&ssl=1" alt="U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Several groups close to Iran have rejected calls for disarmament or attached conditions that have made an agreement difficult.

The government had initially linked the September 30 withdrawal deadline to the disarmament of non-state armed groups. That target was later moved to June 2027, according to al-Zaidi.

A small number of less powerful militias have agreed to surrender their weapons, while stronger Iran-aligned groups have maintained their positions.

Soldiers from Company D, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division move an MQ-1C Gray Eagle into position prior to conducting a mission at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, on August 4, 2017. He became prime minister after Iraq’s dominant parliamentary bloc nominated him following internal negotiations among its member parties.

The U.S. withdrawal was originally announced as part of a longer process under an agreement reached during the previous U.S. administration. The country remains surrounded by regional conflicts and continues to face threats from Islamic State remnants and armed groups linked to Iran.

Iraq has also been affected by the wider conflict between the United States and Iran, with attacks on U.S. forces and retaliatory strikes against Iran-backed groups taking place on Iraqi territory.

U.S. and coalition bases in Iraq had come under repeated attacks during the recent regional conflict. Iran-backed Iraqi militias also coordinated with Yemen’s Houthi movement in attacks affecting regional targets, including Saudi Arabia.

The withdrawal could reduce the risk of Iraq being used as a direct battlefield between Washington and Iran, but it also removes a major U.S. military presence that had provided intelligence, air support and other capabilities to Iraqi forces.

The Kurdish region has expressed particular concern about the loss of U.S. air defense and military support.

The Kurdish regional government’s Peshmerga Ministry said the region had faced more than 1,000 drone and ballistic-missile attacks during the recent U.S.-Iran conflict.

Kurdish officials have warned that the departure of U.S. forces without replacement defense systems could leave the region more exposed to attacks.

A CH-47 Chinook flown by U.S. Army pilots of 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, General Support Aviation Battalion, 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, loading Norwegian Telemark Battalion Soldiers, Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, Jan. 11, 2023.
