U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, after Tehran offered to restore normal maritime traffic in exchange for a ceasefire, sanctions relief, and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump said Saturday that Iran\u2019s proposal was not acceptable, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday that the waterway could reopen within seven days if the necessary conditions were met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to reporters at the White House before boarding Marine One, Trump said, \u201cI’m rejecting their deal.\u201d \u201cThey want to make a deal where they open the Strait immediately because they’re losing so badly,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump said Iran wanted an agreement with Washington but that the proposal did not meet U.S. requirements. \u201cThey want to make a deal, and I think that’s fine. I like making a deal, too, but that deal would not be acceptable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian officials, however, said on Sunday that it was still awaiting a formal United States response through mediators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rejection came a day after Araghchi outlined Iran\u2019s proposal during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. \u201cIf the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened, a normal maritime passage restored within seven days. The choice now rests with the United States,\u201d Araghchi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the conditions were based on a memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the U.S. in June. \u201cThe actions that the US needs to take are not new. All of them were previously outlined in the memorandum of understanding,\u201d Araghchi said.
