Italy has signed a \u20ac3.7 billion ($4.2 billion) contract for two next-generation DDX destroyers, launching one of the country\u2019s most advanced naval modernization programs. The ships are designed to combine high levels of digitalization, automation, advanced sensors and weapons, and integrated command-and-control systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The contract, signed through the Organization Conjointe de Coop\u00e9ration en mati\u00e8re d\u2019Armement (OCCAR), covers the development, production, logistical studies and Initial In-Service Support (ISS) for the two vessels. Around $1.48 billion of the total value is included as options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The agreement was signed with Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), a joint venture between Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, which holds 51 percent, and defense company Leonardo, which holds 49 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The DDX program represents another major step in Italy\u2019s long-term effort to modernize its Navy. The Italian fleet has already been undergoing renewal through new frigates, multi-mission vessels, amphibious capabilities, submarines, and support ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The DDX will add a larger and more heavily equipped surface combatant to this modernization effort. The first ship is expected to enter service in 2033, followed by the second in 2035 if the option is exercised. We are proud to announce that ORIZZONTE SISTEMI NAVALI S.p.A.
