The Mexican Air Force has acquired a second Lockheed Martin C-130J-30 Super Hercules, expanding its tactical airlift capability as the Fuerza A\u00e9rea Mexicana (FAM) begins to modernize and recapitalize its aging Hercules fleet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockheed Martin announced the acquisition on September 23, 2026, following Mexico\u2019s purchase of its first C-130J-30, announced in January. The acquisition makes Mexico the first country in Latin America to operate the C-130J family and gives the Fuerza A\u00e9rea Mexicana (FAM) two of the new-generation transport aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico has operated C-130 Hercules aircraft for more than five decades, using them for military transportation, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, and other missions requiring the movement of personnel and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The C-130J-30 is the stretched version of the C-130J, with an additional 15 feet of fuselage length compared with the standard aircraft. The additional space allows it to carry larger loads, including up to eight standard 463L pallets, 128 combat troops, or 92 paratroopers, depending on configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft also incorporates upgraded engines, avionics, and other systems that provide improvements in performance, fuel efficiency, and operational capability compared with earlier Hercules variants. The C-130J-30 provides a modern platform while retaining the operational experience and infrastructure developed through decades of Hercules operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Humanitarian Mission in Venezuela<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico\u2019s first C-130J-30 has already been used in a humanitarian mission in Venezuela following a series of earthquakes in June 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said on June 25 that two military transport aircraft had departed for Venezuela carrying 261 personnel, including medical and search-and-rescue specialists, as well as equipment and medical supplies. A C-130 Hercules was also scheduled to transport a further 8 tonnes of medicine and 4 tonnes of rescue equipment and materials.<\/p>\n\n\n

The mission demonstrated the role the new aircraft can play beyond military transportation, particularly in rapidly moving relief supplies and personnel following natural disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockheed Martin said the addition of a second C-130J-30 will double Mexico\u2019s response capability with the type and strengthen its ability to provide humanitarian assistance across Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Venezuela operation also highlighted the importance of tactical airlift for missions beyond conventional military transportation. Large transport aircraft can move personnel, medical teams, relief supplies, generators, rescue equipment, and other material over long distances without depending on commercial transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico’s defense leadership had already indicated plans to strengthen the transport fleet following the Venezuela operation. In July, Defense Secretary General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo said the FAM would be strengthened with two C-130 Super Hercules aircraft, each with a stated cargo capacity of 21 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Replacing Aging Fleet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acquisition is also part of a broader effort to maintain Mexico\u2019s tactical airlift capability as its older Hercules aircraft reach the later stages of their service lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FAM has operated several versions of the C-130 over the years, building extensive experience with the aircraft’s operation, maintenance and logistics. The introduction of the C-130J-30 allows Mexico to modernize the fleet without moving away from a platform already familiar to its air force.<\/p>\n\n\n

Mexican Defense Secretary General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo said in July that the FAM would receive two new C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, describing the aircraft as having a cargo capacity of about 21 tonnes. The September announcement confirms the acquisition of the second aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The C-130J family can perform a wide range of missions, including tactical airlift, airdrop, search and rescue, medical evacuation, firefighting and special operations. Its ability to operate from relatively short runways also makes it suitable for missions where access to major airports may be limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Expanding Air Mobility Capability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second C-130J-30 gives Mexico additional capacity for transporting personnel, equipment, and supplies while improving the availability of the fleet for military and emergency missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lockheed Martin, more than 570 C-130J aircraft are now in service or on order worldwide. The large international user base also provides Mexico with access to an established global support and logistics network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockheed Martin Air Mobility & Maritime Missions Vice President Trish Pagan said Mexico\u2019s continued investment reflects confidence in the C-130J and its ability to support airlift and humanitarian missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The addition of the second aircraft marks an important step in the FAM\u2019s effort to renew its tactical transport capability. With two C-130J-30s, Mexico can build on more than 50 years of experience with the Hercules while gaining a newer aircraft better suited to its future military, disaster-response, and humanitarian requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n
