Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on September 24, 2026, during his first formal state visit to the United States since 2015, with trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, and security issues at the center of talks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit began with an unusual planeside welcome at Joint Base Andrews, marking the second in-person meeting between the two leaders this year after Trump visited Beijing in May 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit produced an extension of the existing U.S.-China trade truce, while both leaders used their opening remarks to emphasize stability and cooperation despite continued differences over technology, Taiwan, and global security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting marked a rare high-level effort by Washington and Beijing to manage several areas of disagreement through direct presidential diplomacy. Both governments have sought to keep tensions from escalating even as their competition has expanded beyond trade into technology, strategic industries and wider geopolitical issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talks also brought together a broad group of issues that affect the wider international economy and security environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decisions taken by the two governments on tariffs, technology restrictions, supply chains and strategic relations can have consequences well beyond the bilateral relationship, making the summit closely watched by allies, businesses and other governments.<\/p>\n\n\n

Red Carpet and Formal Welcome<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived at Joint Base Andrews after flying from China. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump personally greeted them on the tarmac, a break from the usual protocol for visiting leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The welcome included a red carpet, an honor guard, military flyovers, national anthems, and the flags of both countries. B-1 bombers also took part in the military display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the first time a U.S. president had welcomed a foreign leader at the base since then-President Barack Obama received Pope Francis there in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xi said upon arrival that China and the United States \u201cshould be partners, not rivals\u201d and that the \u201chistorical logic of peaceful coexistence\u201d between the two countries had not changed. He also said the interests of the two peoples \u201care deeply intertwined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday morning, Trump formally welcomed Xi at the White House in a state arrival ceremony involving 479 military personnel from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony included an Armed Forces Full Honor Cordon, military bands, a presidential salute, a military review, and performances by the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. Chinese and U.S. flags were displayed together during the ceremony.
