{"id":37848,"date":"2026-09-21T06:27:59","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T03:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/?p=37848"},"modified":"2026-09-21T06:30:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T03:30:44","slug":"germany-strengthens-air-capabilities-with-first-f-35a-lightning-ii-fighter-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/germany-strengthens-air-capabilities-with-first-f-35a-lightning-ii-fighter-aircraft\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany strengthens air capabilities with first F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>8 minute read<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Germany has received its first F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft from the U.S. defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin, marking the start of deliveries under its order for 35 aircraft to replace the country\u2019s aging Tornado fleet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin presented the aircraft to the German government at its production facility in Fort Worth, Texas, on September 18, 2026, during a ceremony attended by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first F-35A will remain in the United States as part of Germany\u2019s training program, and the first batch of aircraft is expected to arrive at B\u00fcchel Air Base in Germany in late 2027. The fleet is scheduled to reach full operational capability in 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35 acquisition is a major part of Germany\u2019s effort to modernize its combat aircraft fleet and strengthen its ability to operate with other NATO air forces. Germany is introducing the aircraft as European NATO members expand investment in fighter aircraft, air and missile defense, long-range weapons, ammunition, drones, and other military capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany ordered 35 F-35As in 2022, and the first eight aircraft are scheduled to remain at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas, where German pilots and maintenance personnel will train.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Historic day in Fort Worth! \ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8<br>Today, Germany&#8217;s first F-35 was rolled out. Germany plans to retire the Tornado by 2030 as the F-35A becomes operational at B\u00fcchel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tornado has performed several roles, including strike, reconnaissance and electronic warfare. The F-35A will take over the Tornado&#8217;s main strike role, while Germany is also introducing 15 Eurofighter ECR aircraft for electronic reconnaissance and electronic-warfare missions. The two aircraft are therefore intended to provide complementary capabilities within the German Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35A is a fifth-generation multirole fighter designed to operate in heavily defended airspace. It combines low-observable characteristics with advanced sensors, mission systems and secure data links, allowing it to collect, process and share information with other forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than relying only on information from its own radar, the aircraft combines data from multiple sensors to produce an integrated picture for the pilot. Information can also be exchanged with other F-35s and allied platforms, supporting operations in which aircraft and other military systems work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bundeswehr identifies sensor-data fusion, networking and reduced radar detectability as key features of the F-35A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius highlighted the F-35A&#8217;s stealth characteristics, sensor technology and ability to operate closely with other platforms when Germany&#8217;s first aircraft was presented in Fort Worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft&#8217;s networked design is particularly relevant to Germany because the F-35 is already being introduced by a growing number of NATO countries. (Image Credit: Lockheed Martin)<br><\/sup><\/em><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Advanced Sensors and Weapons<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35A is designed as a multirole fighter capable of conducting air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Its low-observable design reduces its radar signature, making the aircraft more difficult for opposing radar systems to detect and track. Its sensor suite is designed to collect information from the surrounding battlespace and combine it into a common operational picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft can carry weapons internally, helping preserve its low-observable characteristics, and can also carry additional weapons externally when stealth is less important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its mission systems and weapons can support a range of operations, including air defense, precision strike, and suppression of enemy air defenses. The combination of sensors, communications and weapons allows the F-35A to perform both as a fighter aircraft and as a source of information for other forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35&#8217;s ability to share information is also central to its role in networked operations. Data collected by one aircraft can be used by other aircraft or connected forces, allowing different platforms to coordinate their activities and build a broader picture of the operational environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Germany, this capability will complement the country&#8217;s existing Eurofighter fleet and its growing cooperation with other NATO air forces operating the F-35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Germany Joins Growing European F-35 Fleet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany is joining a growing group of European NATO countries that operate or are introducing the F-35. Denmark, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom are among the European operators, while several other NATO members have also selected the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expanding number of F-35 operators provides opportunities for common training, maintenance procedures, logistics and operational cooperation. At the same time, European air forces continue to operate fourth-generation fighters such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany will continue to operate and develop its Eurofighter fleet alongside the F-35A. The two aircraft have different capabilities and are intended to complement each other, with the Eurofighter also being adapted for electronic warfare and reconnaissance missions through the Eurofighter ECR program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>European Defense Spending and Airpower Modernization<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expansion of European F-35 fleets is taking place alongside a broader increase in defense spending and military procurement across NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, allied leaders committed to investing 5% of GDP annually in defense by 2035. The commitment includes at least 3.5% for core defense requirements and up to 1.5% for defense- and security-related spending, including critical infrastructure, resilience, innovation and the defense industrial base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The additional spending is being directed toward a broad range of capabilities rather than fighter aircraft alone. NATO&#8217;s capability requirements include air and missile defense, long-range weapons, logistics, large land formations and other military capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO is also seeking to expand defense production so that its members can increase manufacturing capacity, replenish stocks and sustain military operations. Countries using the same aircraft can develop common training procedures, maintenance practices and operational approaches, while multinational exercises provide opportunities to operate the aircraft alongside other allied systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly relevant as NATO develops increasingly integrated air operations in which fighter aircraft work alongside air-defense systems, surveillance platforms, drones, ships and ground-based systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO is also pursuing multinational projects involving air and missile defense, air-power resilience and air-launched munitions. In 2026, 15 NATO members agreed to explore multinational approaches to improving aircraft readiness, maintenance, repair and operational resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separately, 17 countries were participating in NATO&#8217;s Air Battle Decisive Munitions project, which supports the acquisition of air-launched munitions and greater interoperability among participating allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Germany, the F-35 therefore represents more than the replacement of an aging aircraft. It also brings the Luftwaffe into a wider network of allied fifth-generation aircraft and common operational capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Impact on NATO Airpower<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany&#8217;s entry into the F-35 fleet will add another major European air force to NATO&#8217;s growing fifth-generation combat-aircraft network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft&#8217;s combination of low observability, sensors, communications and precision weapons gives Germany a platform designed to operate in contested airspace while sharing information with other forces. At the same time, the expansion of the U.S.-designed aircraft means European F-35 operators will remain closely connected to U.S. technology, logistics, software and industrial supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany&#8217;s acquisition therefore reflects two developments taking place at the same time: the modernization of its own combat-aircraft fleet and the wider integration of European air forces within NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comes as European governments seek to increase defense production and strengthen their domestic industrial capabilities.
