The selected companies will now move into the demonstration phase of the development effort, where their interceptor designs will be evaluated as part of the Army\u2019s continuing effort to strengthen its air and missile defense capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision also removes Rafael\u2019s U.S. subsidiary from the competition, leaving Lockheed Martin and the Boeing-Anduril team to continue the development of the second interceptor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Army spokesperson confirmed that Lockheed Martin and the Boeing-Anduril team had been selected to advance to the next stage of the competitive program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe companies have been selected to advance to the demonstration phase of the development effort,\u201d the spokesperson said. The Army added that additional information about the competition would be released when appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement follows Boeing\u2019s confirmation on September 9 that its team with Anduril had advanced. The Army\u2019s latest statement confirms that Lockheed Martin will also continue into the demonstration phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rafael\u2019s U.S. subsidiary, which joined the competition earlier this year, did not advance. Longer-range systems, meanwhile, provide protection against more distant and demanding threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s IFPC Increment 2 effort is intended to provide an additional layer of defense between these capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The need for a second interceptor became clearer during the development of the Army\u2019s first IFPC Increment 2 solution. Army officials previously said that soldiers would need a more capable interceptor to engage low-flying, supersonic cruise missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second interceptor competition is therefore an important part of the Army\u2019s broader effort to improve its ability to defend against different types of aerial threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Boeing and Anduril Present New Interceptor Design<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing and Anduril have described their proposed interceptor as a compact missile designed to combine several technologies in a single system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Boeing, the interceptor includes seeker technology, a compact form factor, and a solid rocket motor supplied by Anduril Rocket Motor Systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design also uses a Modular Open Systems Architecture, which is intended to support the integration of different technologies and components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bob Ciesla, vice president of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems, said the company\u2019s approach is designed to support reliable and affordable production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScalable production approach is designed to provide a reliable, affordable layer of defense against a range of aerial threats to protect the warfighter with practical, dependable capability when it matters most,\u201d Ciesla said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Boeing-Anduril team\u2019s design is one of the two concepts that will continue into the next phase of the Army\u2019s competition. The Boeing-Anduril team joined the competition in December 2025. Rafael\u2019s U.S. subsidiary was added in February 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three companies were then competing to develop the second interceptor for the IFPC Increment 2 system. The Army\u2019s September 2026 decision narrows the competition to Lockheed Martin and Boeing-Anduril.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies will now move forward with the demonstration phase, while the Army continues to assess the designs and their ability to meet the service\u2019s requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>First IFPC Interceptor Under Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second interceptor competition is separate from the Army\u2019s earlier selection of a first interceptor for the IFPC Increment 2 system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late 2024, the Army awarded a contract to Dynetics, a subsidiary of Leidos, and RTX for the first interceptor solution. That system combines Dynetics\u2019 Enduring Shield launcher with a ground-launched version of RTX\u2019s AIM-9X Sidewinder missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Enduring Shield launcher is designed to provide a mobile air defense capability for U.S. forces. The first interceptor is intended to provide the Army with a new capability for engaging aerial threats. However, Army officials later identified the need for a second, more capable interceptor to deal with lower-flying, supersonic cruise missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That requirement led to the Army\u2019s search for another interceptor design. The second interceptor is expected to complement the first system rather than replace it.
