Chinese officials described Qatar as an important strategic partner and said Beijing was ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Doha on regional and international issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, along with Qatar\u2019s efforts to mediate between Washington and Tehran, was a central issue during the visit. The security of the Strait of Hormuz was also a major concern, as disruptions to shipping through the waterway threaten energy supplies and international trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ibrahim bin Sultan Al Hashmi, director of the Department of Media and Communications at Qatar\u2019s Foreign Ministry, said Doha was working with several partners, including China, to support diplomatic efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not acceptable at all to have this state of no war and no peace. This is not beneficial to the region, the countries of the region, and the people,\u201d Al Hashmi told reporters in Doha on Tuesday following the meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cQatar is working hard with its partners, including China. Diplomatic efforts are being exerted, and new ideas are being discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>China and Qatar Expand Strategic Cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the visit, Sheikh Mohammed met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The two officials discussed bilateral relations, regional developments and diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qatar\u2019s Foreign Ministry said the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation across several sectors and on the need to protect security and freedom of international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Glad to meet with HE Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People&#39;s Republic of China. Our countries share a decades-long strategic relationship and we look forward to expanding it in investment, energy, advanced industries and technology, to serve our shared interests. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Uf0bSt5031\">pic.twitter.com\/Uf0bSt5031<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0628\u0646 \u0639\u0628\u062f\u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0646 (@MBA_AlThani_) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MBA_AlThani_\/status\/2096933673983467647?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 7, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar\u2019s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a solution that would guarantee freedom of maritime navigation and create conditions for a broader agreement capable of delivering lasting peace in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed described the discussions with Wang as fruitful. \u201cWe discussed strengthening bilateral relations to serve our mutual interests, reviewed regional and international developments, and looked forward to working together for international peace and security,\u201d he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wang said China-Qatar relations had made considerable progress under the strategic direction of the two countries\u2019 leaders. \u201cChina firmly supports Qatar in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence, security and stability,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also described China as \u201cthe most reliable and long-term partner in Qatar\u2019s development process\u201d and said Beijing was ready to maintain communication and cooperation with Doha on regional and international affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Qatar\u2019s adherence to the one-China principle and opposition to external interference in China\u2019s internal affairs. He also said Doha was willing to strengthen coordination with Beijing through the United Nations and other international organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Stronger Energy Ties<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Energy remains the foundation of the China-Qatar relationship. Other figures cited during the visit put Qatar\u2019s share at nearly one-third of Chinese LNG demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two countries have also developed long-term energy partnerships. QatarEnergy has signed 27-year LNG supply agreements with Chinese state-owned companies CNPC and Sinopec. The Chinese companies have also taken stakes in Qatar\u2019s massive North Field gas expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These links have become particularly important as instability around the Strait of Hormuz threatens international energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around one-fifth of global oil and LNG normally passes through the waterway. Any prolonged disruption could therefore affect energy prices, shipping costs and supplies well beyond the Gulf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Shared Concern on Hormuz<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Strait of Hormuz was a major issue during Sheikh Mohammed\u2019s meetings in Beijing. Qatar depends heavily on maritime routes for its LNG exports, while China relies on Gulf energy supplies to support its economy. Both countries therefore have a direct interest in restoring freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qatar has publicly called for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened and has supported diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement that would allow shipping to resume safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has also backed Qatar\u2019s mediation efforts and called for a diplomatic solution to the wider conflict. During his meeting with Sheikh Mohammed, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi repeated Beijing\u2019s position that military pressure cannot resolve the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPressure exerted through military means is not a solution; dialogue and negotiations are the only viable path,\u201d Wang said. (Image Credit: Logos Press)<\/sup><\/em><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Different Approaches Toward Iran<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite their shared interest in ending the crisis, Qatar and China have taken somewhat different approaches toward Iran. Qatar has publicly condemned attacks by Tehran on its territory and on other Gulf states. Doha has also become increasingly frustrated by stalled attempts to end the conflict, while continuing to support dialogue between Washington and Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China, meanwhile, has generally avoided directly criticizing Iran over attacks or the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz. Beijing has repeatedly placed much of the responsibility for the conflict on the United States and Israel and has argued that the conflict should never have started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China is also one of Iran\u2019s most important economic and diplomatic partners. It has been the largest buyer of Iranian oil for years and continues to oppose unilateral sanctions against Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gives Beijing a potentially important role in any diplomatic effort, although it remains unclear how much pressure China is prepared to put on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closer coordination with China offers another channel for diplomacy for Qatar. Beijing maintains relationships with Tehran that could potentially give it influence that other international actors do not have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Balancing Ties with US and China<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growing relationship between Doha and Beijing does not mean Qatar is moving away from the United States. Qatar remains a major US security partner and hosts Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military base in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The importance of that relationship increased after Iran launched two ballistic missiles at Qatar on March 3. One missile was intercepted, while the other struck Al Udeid. No casualties were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack prompted Qatar to seek stronger security ties with Washington. Image Credit: Qatar News Agency\/via X)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approach reflects Qatar\u2019s broader foreign policy, which relies on maintaining relationships with several major powers rather than depending on a single partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Broader Economic Cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two-day visit was not focused only on the Iran war. Chinese Premier Li Qiang met Sheikh Mohammed in Beijing and called for deeper cooperation in traditional and renewable energy, infrastructure, artificial intelligence, investment and finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheikh Mohammed highlighted Qatar\u2019s interest in expanding cooperation in high technology and advanced manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two countries are also seeking to increase investment and business links. According to Invest Qatar, about 520 Chinese companies operate in Qatar. Chinese investment projects in the country have generated more than $3 billion and created more than 3,200 jobs over the past decade. The relationship has therefore expanded well beyond LNG and traditional trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China and Qatar established diplomatic relations in 1988, and their economic relationship has grown sharply in recent years. Beijing has become Qatar\u2019s largest trading partner and an increasingly important destination for Qatari energy exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both sides now appear to see opportunities to expand cooperation into technology, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, infrastructure and financial services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing of Sheikh Mohammed\u2019s visit has given the China-Qatar relationship added strategic importance. The continuing U.S.-Iran conflict has created serious risks for Gulf states, energy exporters and major Asian importers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qatar faces the challenge of protecting its territory and energy infrastructure while continuing its role as a mediator. China faces the challenge of protecting access to vital energy supplies while maintaining its relationship with Iran and avoiding deeper involvement in the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two countries have overlapping interests in restoring stability, keeping energy supplies moving, and preventing further escalation.
