CENTCOM said two tankers were permanently disabled and a third sank after extensive bombing.

Iran condemned the attacks and described them as illegal and contrary to the United Nations Charter. The waterway is a critical route for global energy supplies, with a significant share of the world’s oil and gas shipments normally passing through it. Iran has insisted that it will retain some measure of control over the strategic waterway, while the United States has declared that the strait remains open.

The U.S. military has been helping commercial vessels navigate through a southern route, while Iran maintains that the waterway remains effectively closed. The dispute has created uncertainty in global energy markets and contributed to higher fuel prices.

According to U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, about 9 million barrels of oil per day were passing through the strait on average. He said that, when combined with oil moving through pipelines elsewhere in the region, flows had reached roughly two-thirds or more of pre-conflict levels.

The Strait of Hormuz in the background with U.S. President Trump, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, and the U.S. and Iranian flags. He also said gasoline prices in the United States could begin to decline as summer demand weakens following the Labor Day holiday.

The pressure on American consumers has nevertheless become a political issue ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November. The average price of diesel in the United States reached $5.85 per gallon on Friday, compared with $3.71 a year earlier.

Oil Blockade Puts Pressure on Iran

The conflict has also sharply affected Iran’s ability to export crude oil. Maritime intelligence company TankerTrackers said Middle Eastern crude exports during August were down 39 percent from the January-February baseline of 18.5 million barrels per day. It estimated the current shortfall at 7.2 million barrels per day, although the deficit has narrowed from 12.4 million barrels per day in May.

Iran’s oil exports have been particularly affected by the U.S. naval blockade. TankerTrackers said Iran’s baseline exports of about 1.68 million barrels per day could remain at zero for the foreseeable future, depending on whether a future agreement is reached.

Iranian authorities have acknowledged that the country has been unable to move crude through the blockade in the same way as before. However, Tehran says the restrictions do not represent a complete halt to its oil trade.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said last month that as many as 90 million barrels of oil had been exported during the period when a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran was in effect.

Fire and smoke rise during what U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) says are strikes on Iranian oil carriers, at an unknown location in this screengrab taken from a handout video released on September 5, 2026.
