{"id":3750,"date":"2016-03-21T21:18:44","date_gmt":"2016-03-21T21:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=3750"},"modified":"2022-01-27T11:26:23","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T09:26:23","slug":"laser-weapons-for-fighters-drones-ready-for-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/laser-weapons-for-fighters-drones-ready-for-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Laser weapons for fighters, drones ready for use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Military technology:&nbsp;Lockheed Martin is ready to deliver Laser Weaponry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Laser guns will no longer be the realms of fiction movies as the swift technological advancement has brought governments and militaries much closer to their dream of arming fighter jets with laser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe technologies now exist,\u201d said Paul Shattuck, company director for Directed Energy Systems at <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lockheed Martin<\/a><\/span>. \u201cThey can be packaged into a size, weight, power and thermal which can be fit onto relevant tactical platforms, whether it\u2019s a ship, whether it\u2019s a ground vehicle or whether it\u2019s an airborne platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In fact, Lockheed Martin is ready to start providing the U.S. military with laser weapons capable of 30 KW beams as soon as they receive the order, according to three Lockheed executives in an interview with <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/story\/defense\/innovation\/2016\/03\/15\/laser-weapons-directed-energy-lockheed-pewpew\/81826876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Defense News<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lockheed Martin\u2019s ATHENA (<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/us\/news\/press-releases\/2015\/march\/ssc-space-athena-laser.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advanced Test High Energy Asset<\/a><\/span>) lasers can disable a truck\u2019s engine from over a mile away with only 30 KW of power. It is already in production and capable of up to 120 KW with the right set of modules. Photo: Lockheed Martin.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe question is moving from, \u2018Do we have the devices?\u2019 to \u2018How quickly can we integrate them on the platform?\u2019\u201d said Daniel Miller, Senior Fellow for Air Vehicle Science and Systems with Lockheed\u2019s Skunk Works division.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Far from being science fiction, Lockheed Martin\u2019s <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.pk\/us\/products\/ADAM.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air Defense Anti-Munitions<\/a><\/span> (ADAM) has already weathered several tests destroying incoming rockets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lockheed Martin is not the only company building laser weapons. Boeing has developed an <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ijp3-zjTIp0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-drone laser<\/a><\/span> that takes only a few minutes to set up. <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/article\/2010-07\/video-raytheon-demonstrates-ship-based-solid-state-laser-weapon-incinerating-uav-flight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Raytheon<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.photonics.com\/Article.aspx?AID=41134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Textron<\/a><\/span> are also developing the technology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With more companies testing the laser devices, governments and militaries will have the advantage of having a more affordable and effective&nbsp;system.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">US Army will have laser weapons by 2023 as research bosses say killer technology is &#8216;very close&#8217;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The US Army is planning to deploy the first <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/defence\/12178840\/US-Army-aims-to-arm-soldiers-with-lasers-in-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laser weapons in 2023<\/a><\/span>, revealed Mary J. Miller, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Research and Technology to the House Armed Services Committee&#8217;s Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miller explained that the Army wants to understand the lasers&#8217; full capabilities &#8216;before we offer it to a Soldier.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;Lasers have been promised for a long time, but they&#8217;ve never held up and delivered what was asked for, so the operators are rightfully skeptical,&#8217; she <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-3470246\/US-Army-laser-weapons-2023-research-bosses-say-killer-technology-close.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed out<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Air Force said it was already flying prototype weapons. Dr. David Walker, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for Science, Technology and Engineering, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, said the Air Force is working with Special Operations Command to develop an offensive laser that will be fitted to AFSOC AC-130 gunships. &nbsp;Part of that technology, he said, includes &#8216;beam-steering and power and thermal management.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;The Air Force is flying every day with lasers under its transport aircraft, using them as infrared countermeasure system&#8217; Walker <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-3470246\/US-Army-laser-weapons-2023-research-bosses-say-killer-technology-close.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Air Force General Hawk Carlisle believes directed-energy weapons pods could soon be affixed to fighter jets to destroy or disable incoming missiles, drones, and even enemy aircraft at a much lower &#8216;cost per shot&#8217; than missiles or even guns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The front runner for the Air Force system is believed to be called the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/program\/high-energy-liquid-laser-area-defense-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High-Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System<\/a><\/span> (HELLADS), and will create a laser small enough to be mounted on a plane, and is expected to be ready for use by 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In lab and development tests in which it was pitted against mortars, low-flying missiles and drones, the HELLADS produced &#8220;unprecedented power and beam quality for its size,&#8221; according to a public statement from <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/NewsEvents\/Releases\/2015\/05\/21a.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rich Bagnell, HELLADS program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpafb.af.mil\/AFRL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air Force Research Laboratory<\/a><\/span> (AFRL) is on track to demonstrate a working laser weapon on a fighter jet by 2020, it has revealed. The AFRL is also working on a defensive laser shield.
