{"id":3737,"date":"2016-03-18T20:39:14","date_gmt":"2016-03-18T20:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=3737"},"modified":"2016-03-18T20:57:45","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T20:57:45","slug":"paris-attacks-suspect-abdeslam-captured-in-brussels-raid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/paris-attacks-suspect-abdeslam-captured-in-brussels-raid\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris attacks suspect Abdeslam captured in Brussels raid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Paris Terror Attack fugitive, Salah Abdeslam, among 5 suspects arrested following a shootout in Brussels on Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A total of five people were arrested on Friday, including the most wanted fugitive following the Paris attacks,\u00a0Salah Abdeslam,\u00a0in a four-hour police operation in Brussels suburb,\u00a0Belgium&#8217;s federal prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Salah Abdeslam, was arrested Friday along with two other suspects in a raid on an apartment in a \u00a0French president <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20160318-brussels-anti-terror-op-after-paris-attacks-suspects-prints-found\" target=\"_blank\">Francois Hollande said<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Belgian police discovered what they believe to be a \u201csafe house\u201d used by the fugitive Paris attack suspect Salah Abdeslam in a Brussels neighborhood, and found bomb-making equipment in the flat, the federal prosecutor\u2019s office said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abdeslam, 26, who is believed to have played a key logistical role in the November 13 attacks that left <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"At least 129 killed in France\u2019s deadliest attack since World War II\" href=\"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/at-least-129-killed-in-frances-deadliest-attack-since-world-war-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\">130 people dead<\/a><\/span>, was wounded and captured in a raid by armed police in Brussels on Friday after four months on the run.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We got him,&#8221; said Belgium&#8217;s Immigration Minister Theo Francken.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">French President Fran\u00e7ois Hollande, in a joint news \u00a0briefing with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, confirmed Abdeslam&#8217;s arrest and said he was\u00a0&#8220;directly linked to\u00a0preparing, organizing\u00a0and, unfortunately,\u00a0perpetrating&#8221; the attacks in November in Paris that killed 130 people.\u00a0Michel called the arrests\u00a0a success in the \u201cfight against terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur fight is not finished,\u201d Hollande told reporters in Brussels, where EU leaders had been holed up all day discussing Europe\u2019s migrant crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">He said French officials would \u201cimminently\u201d request Abdeslam\u2019s extradition to France.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Shortly after the arrest, President Obama called Hollande and Michel to congratulate them on the arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3738\" style=\"width: 123px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Salah-Abdeslam.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3738\" class=\" wp-image-3738\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Salah-Abdeslam.jpg?resize=113%2C135\" alt=\"This undated file photo provided by the Belgian Federal Police shows 26-year old Salah Abdeslam, who is wanted by police in connection with the November terror attacks in Paris. (Photo: Belgian Federal Police via AP)\" width=\"113\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>This undated file photo provided by the Belgian Federal Police shows 26-year old Salah Abdeslam (Photo: Belgian Federal Police via AP)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Investigators believe much of the planning and preparation for the November bombing and shooting rampage in Paris was conducted in Brussels by young French and Belgian nationals, some of whom fought in Syria for Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The attack strained relations between Brussels and Paris, with French officials suggesting Belgium was lax in monitoring the activities of hundreds of militants returned from Syria.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Who Is Salah Abdeslam?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abdeslam is the only member of the 10-person team that conducted the Paris attacks, which killed 130 people, who is still alive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind who was killed in France shortly after the attacks, Abdeslam did not have a long history of jihadism, and had not traveled to Syria to fight alongside ISIS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Abdeslam was reportedly a childhood friend of Abaaoud. Both were the children of Moroccan immigrants living in Molenbeek.
